Wave sails are 4.7, 5.3 and 6.2. Used with 80L wave board or 98L freeride. Sweetest wave sail is 5.3. All NP. Two masts needed. One wave boom.
Slalom sails are 6.5, 7.5 and 8.2. Used with 114L or 105L boards. Sweetest slalom one is the 6.5. All NP. One mast needed. One slalom boom.
That's about the minimum kit for me. I weigh 72 kgs.
sboardcrazy:
23 knots of wind is still A LOT of wind = about 42 kph
using the sail calculator with 64 kilos - that would suggest a 3.6 sail
with a small , light board obviously
that alone would imply technique and skills to me
in a previous discussion people said the same thing - technique impacts size of sail
AND type of sail used
since i use race sails - they tend to be larger than what others are using
regardless of the fact that i am a heavyweight
for sail spacing the sail calculator can take care of that
for me 100 kilos - 10.0/13 knots, 8.4/16 7.0/19 6.3/21 knots and then i too gt ovrwhelmed
inversely for 64 kg 13 knots/6.5 16 knots/5.3 19 knots/4.6 and 21 knots/4.0
6.5/5.3/4.6/4.0 - looks like small sails to me
sounds like your biggest sail ever would be a 7.0
is this about right and make sense ??
I use my 7.2m in 8-15kts ( can hold it in gusty up to 18kts but no fun)- 125ltre board
- 6.6m in 15-18/20kts lower end- 125ltre board
5.8m solid 15 - 20kts - 95ltre
4.8m hucker ( equiv c 5.2m ) around 18-23kts./ 95ltre ( have to start using the 78ltre here)
.4.2m 20-25kts upper end / - 95 0r 78ltre
3.8m 25-30kts ( hanging on at 30) - 78ltre
crappy 3.2m for 30kts + if not too gusty..& then blown around like a leaf..
78ltre miles too big..
I can hang on to a wider range than this but it would be survival ,no fun and risky..![]()
Does weight make any difference.. say 2 sailors freeride with similar abilities..One 90kgs one 64kgs..would they need similar sail gaps? I find I get overpowered VERY quickly once it gets 23kts + ( 64kgs..)
well at 64 Kgs you would, for me it starts to become fun from 23 knots, i prefer 25-27ish or a nice 10-15 cross off
, but im a fit 120Kg so i need more wind so i can have the same fun that you might have in 20 knots
Yep I think my 20kts ![]()
is a big persons 30kts +
By the time all the big guys are frothing at the mouth about the forecast I'm starting to get into survival mode..![]()
Windsurfers waxing lyrical about how little gear they have, and how they want less?
Those germans and their austerity have a lot to answer for.
LOL, go big or go home than!! ![]()

And for my 67 kg's:
18 - 21 knots: Gaastra Manic 5.0 and Tabou Pocket 75
22 - 27 knots: Gaastra Manic 4.5 and Tabou Pocket 75 or Tabou Quadster 67
28 - 40+ knots: Gaastra Manic 3.7 and Tabou Quadster 67
(and for 2014 it will be: IQ 5.0 , 4.5 and 4.2 and Manic 3.7)
5.6m is my favourite size by far! So light and throw about. Can work for me in 15-20,best in 18-25. Bit of a handful anything above that. Next size down for me is around 5.0m,don't need anything smaller in a race sail really. 7.0m is next size up from 5.6m,would use in 12-16,then 8.6m for gusty 5-15 knot days.
I have a disgusting number of sails. Most cocommonly use a 5.7 wave sail from about 15-20 knts and then a 4.7 for any stronger. I have a 6.5 and a 6.2 but rarely use them, ill take them with me incase the wind drops off but I usually only to out when it's 17 knots plus
I have the following
4.2m Zone
4.7m Global
4.8m Loco
5.0m Global
5.2m Loco
5.4m Global
5.6m Loco
5.8m Global
6.3m TR4
7.0m TR4
7.6m TR4
10m TR1
I think size, design and purpose must be considered. Ie I wont take the locos in waves as the Globals are much nicer etc.
The 5.2m Loco is my most used sail.
