I am looking to make a trip west in the beginning of Dec, I will be sailing and my son will be kiteing.Would safety Bay be good for both at this time of the year and can anyone recommend some resonable accomodation. Is there any sailing done around Mandurah.I guess that I'm looking for a base then to try and sail several locations.

There's a fair bit of holiday accommodation around the Rockingham area, and you can search for it on those typical stayz websites. At least with a lot of these you can check the availability straight away.

I'm not a local so I don't know about the conditions, but I have been there in mid November in (2003 I think) and found the seabreeze was kicking in every day, yet another year (2005), even in January it was sometimes too light. You take your chances, but at least when it is windy, it's pretty good.

Dale.

You should be reasonably safe with seabreezes in December. Safety Bay tends to pick up the wind a bit earlier than Perth. As said there is holiday accomodation around the Safety Bay area. I would not know where to look though - I guess do a search of web sites and the odd real-estate company.

There is wavesailing around Mandurah although the swell is usually small and it struggles to pick up any decent waves.

Perth is 40min from Safety Bay and Lancelin is 90min north of Perth, so Lancelin is a good bet for a change of scenery. Lancelin will just about always have a wave to sail on.

Been sailing Safety Bay for nigh on 20 years and am a local.
It's a great spot for yourself and son to sail. You can choose between Safety Bay, Warnbro Sound, Shoalwater Bay or the outer reef area. Lots of open ocean to yourselves.
For a good season December should have plenty of good wind days (18 to 23 knots avg)
For a bad season you'll still get days like that just fewer, but it will still be good !
Like a previous reply you can quickly get on the freeway to head north to the Swan River (not recommended), Lancelin, Cottesloe area etc or 30mins south to Mandurah area.
As for accomodation take a look at http://members.iinet.net.au/~ramsden/rockingham.html
Hope this is of help.

Nice flat water for kiting but if you're sailing you might need a weed fin. There is lots of weed which seems to get hooked even on a wave fin.

Hi samr. I was there for a week in November 2003 and the wind was perfect all week. I stayed at a holiday rental right opposite the water on Safety Bay Rd - $90/night for a nice house that was set up to sleep close to 10 people. I booked it through the Rockingham Tourist Centre - really helpful. Didn't have a web site at the time, but I think now - www.rockinghamvisitorcentre.com.au/accommodation/results Good luck!

Hi Samr,

We operate the wind & kite school at Safety Bay, if you go to our locations page down the bottom is a link to accommodation, we have listed out the places in order of closeness to the windsurfing bay, some are only walking distance.

By the way the windsurfing bay is at the corner of Safety Bay Road and Bent st, you will see a big sandbar about 500m north, local rules are that the kiters stay north of the sandbar and windsurfers south, although of course it is a lovely bay to explore with many options.

Hi ya samr, im a safety bay sailer. It's a great spot for your son on his kite and you on your board .It's safe and shallow where your lad will kite and you can head out into bay on your board for some choppy fun or find some friendly waves at the back of the islands. Accomodation is not so great around here, unless you wanna stay at the waikiki pub which is right on the safety bay beach!
I will go see if there is a bed and breakfast along the beach if ya want ...grab there number? :) If not there are heaps of hotels and stuff in Mandurah and thats only 20min down the road and it's a real easy drive(no mad traffic).
