Reminds me of when Chris was demonstrating an aerodynamic principle to me in Mandurah, sailing along literally 50cm upwind yelling out "Can you feel it? How about now?"

As to who's at fault? Meh. Racing incident. They both knew where the other one was, no harm, no foul

Great footage HF!

Clearly caused by downdraft. Gotta stop putting up self-incriminating evidence, HF!

Maybe Chris was trying to do his fart joke. 'Pull my finger, come on, pull my finger"

The up wind sailer has track position and right of way, it's up to the downwind sailer to make a safe passing move. Looks like he tried to push Chris up wind but he said no you don't and rightly so.
Nice footage Col, got all the angles covered

that goes against the sailing rule that i recall whereby the boat to leeward can make the windward boat round up into the wind by calling up.

Funny and between mates so who cares about ROW.......but I say Chris is in the wrong - overtaking vessel must keep clear. Over rides any upwind / downwind etc as if you seek to pass you keep clear.

From a sailing background racing dinghies i tend to agree leeward sailer can push windward sailer up.

I was totally in the wrong there if it were a race... I was trying to see how close I could get . It looks flat but it was actually quite rough. I didnt notice but 3 seconds earlier Matt suddenly swung upwind and then I got washed down by a chop just before I hit... as the leach bumped matt it yanked my front hand pulling me into him, and there was no way I could hold it or steer upwind. No damage so it was fine both my boards anyway.

I thought if the windward sailor is in front he has the right to hold his ground.

Yes fellas, but I still submit it is irrelevant as if you are overtaking you must keep clear.

(Chris I missed it before but yeah that bit of chop did push you downwind substantially. I am suprised no damage, bet it was a hoot... that is, once you realised there was no damage )

Yacht racing rules are as follows.
*Windward vessel to keep clear until mast abeam.
* Overtaking vessel to keep clear.
* It's okay to run someone over if it's your mate. Especially if he's one one of your boards.
(not sure if the last one is in the blue book, but maybe it should be)

No such thing as mast abeam anymore
Rule 11 - windward boat keeps clear - is what it is here
Rule 12 - overtaking boat keeps clear - is only really for if someone runs into the back of someone else.

There's always a few "shenanigans" going on around here...we just don't have the choppers on stand-by.

When I was learning, a local 'seasoned' w/surfer (& mate) decided to do a drive-by, a little close & did a small chop-hop behind me. I felt a whack on my calf muscle & both of us hit the water...I was too frightened to feel my leg with my hand because as it was in the middle of winter, and not much feeling due to the cold water, I had a picture in my head of my calf muscle sliced off by his fin. As it turned out, false alarm, it was the rail that got me, so after a few words (and an apology) we both kept on our ways.
