Hello,
Lately I’ve created a lot of beginner topics, with my simple questions answered within the first 5 posts. Doing so, I’m just going to make this topic for my own questions about the wikid sport windsurfing. Rather than creating a new topic each time.

Each time i have a question ill just resurrect this forum and all you handy peeps can help me out all over again :D

Avoid the topic de-railing please :P

Q1; Learning to carve jibe, but struggling to come out the other side planning, the only time i can succeed a full planning carve jibe is when I’m seriously pumping in the last phase of the jibe.

Does this simply mean, that my 4.7 ezzy is not enough to carry my 155 lt board, planning?
Or could I be doing a common mistake that you’ve all done?

Sounds like you are expecting a lot of your 4.7. How much wind is there?

You have your weight too far back on the board and you're stalling the board.

Bend ze knees
Weight forward
Press down through the boom
Engage the rail.
Carve

If you are a learner on a 4.7 ezzy and 155 lt board I am surprised you are thinking about planing carve gybes and if you are pumping in the last part of the gybe then there is obviously not a lot of wind around. If you are already at this level you need a better balance. Try a smaller board, a 4.7 is a high wind sail for a small wave board type. To plane out of a gybe on a 155 litre board requires a large sail and a decent amount of skill. I'm surprised the 4.7 even gets you going on that gear....

use your 4.7 in 30+knots

(1) technique as per Gorgo's post. It will take years to perfect just work at it

(2) a 4.7 on a 155L will not generate anywhere near enough force to hold the front of the board down (mastfoot pressure) and enable u to engage the rail fully. The ideal sail range for your board will be 7 - 9m if you are planing and doing carve gybes. 4.7 on that board is for learning and it sounds like you are progressing so fast you need to think about different gear?

a 4.7 on a 155L ? in what 30+ knots. like the others said if your trying to gybe and riding at that stage get a setup that will allow you to learn those things, ie 100L and a 6.5 or somthing ( i dont know what your weights like) move out of your comfort zone

yha as always mate but its a big board and would think a 4.7 is very small my be even too small i would think. im 75 kgs and i sail mostly a 103L witha 6.6 or 5.5 and happy to blast around most of the day in 15-20+ knots i just honestly think that combo is asking a bit to much as you progess but thats just my thoughts mate

Are there any Windsurfing Accesseries that prevent you damaging your board from catapaults?
I remember reading something about boom bras, not quite sure what they are or what there purpose are, do these prevent damages?

Cheers

I would say it is debatable. If you are hitting the board hard enough to do damage, 1/2" of padding won't save it. Another product is Jez's knob, which goes in the mast track and deflects the mast away so it can't hit the front of the board, but some say it can damage your board around the mast track due to leverage. It could get in the way during tacks too. then there are nose protectors. I would never use one personally as they would hide any damage that has occured underneath. Rather than protecting your board from catapults it's better to learn how to catapult safely (or stop catapulting ). Sheet in and hold on and you will spin around past the nose and land on your back on the water most of the time.

I'm looking at buying Swooshs
North Duke 5.9
And wanting it to be my primary freestyle sail with my new
2008 Starboard Flare 99

I'm aware some brand masts simply dont mix with other brand sails.
i.e NP vs Gaastra

Will my "Neil Pryde 430 X3 imcs21 matrix" work with the Duke?
I dont exactly want to buy another mast, but saying that i do,
as it will be my main freestyle sail which will help me learn countless moves,
therefore it must be forgiving and rigged to perfection!

just answer the question vando lol,
you should of just said "yeah it will work out fine" and i would of accepted your opinion lol

I have a gift voucher with surf fx, so i needa spend the money on something, the only things that i semi need are a matching mast, a forgiving freestyle fin, and a better harness.

some further reading

www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=57643

if you look at the peterman tables. the imcs bend characteristic column you can see that mast bend curves can vary wildly within each manufacturer from year to year. so it is not black and white.

I agree with vando- mast fine.

Freestyle fins are often made from old fins so don't waste money there, get planing along well- be able to stay upwind, jump, gybe and tack well before you worry about freestyle.

Perhaps save your gift voucher for a bit, you often break stuff within your 1st year of sailing.

I used a Neil Pryde 430 X3 in a North Ice 5.7 (similar to the Duke), it worked fine

i never thought that ice of your's look so good with the NP mast. but that doesn't mean that much in reality.

p.s. awesome result at the LOC!

Not saying that he isn't doing very well. I'm saying master the basics first, I guess freestyle gives some a great excuse to fall off at every corner though.
