Hi Guys,
I snapped the fin off my beloved Bic 11 6 windsup. It happened in deep water, around 13-15 knots, getting close to planing with a 6m sail.
Just wondering if people sailing these boards stick with the plastic fins they come with or go for something a bit stronger? The "surfboard" style fin box limits choice a bit I suppose...I was thinking maybe a fibreglass fin designed for a Mal?
Is trying to get these boards planing pushing the limits of the design?
regards,
Barry
Hey Barry, I use an 11'6 BIC and love it. I've not had any problems with the stock fin but I do also use a set of thruster fins in it too. How old is your board and has the fin simply failed from either age or UV damage or maybe previous mechanical damage (ie you whacked it on something another day and didn't notice). I use mine in mainly gliding type wind but it'll plane pretty easy if the wind is there. Any large US box style fin should work, there's some nice ones available in the USA.
shapers in australia sell some nice glass longboard fins.
mfc freewave fins come in us base and are excellent in longboards.
for bespoke fins glide have some excellent fins as do alkali
try and pick shapes with more area in the tip

It's only a few months old, I've definitely clipped it on rocks and reef and run it aground a few times so may well have weakened it....
I changed the fin in my wifes Bic 9 6 windsup to a old glass us box windsurfing fin I had one of my favourites from the eighties! A standard US box fin will have a more secure fit. If you are using it for windsurfing a good US box freeride windsurfing fin works best.. For a looser fee wave fin will work as well.
