What would be the cheapest option to get this old set-up operational to the most basic level?

It is a Tyronsea mast base with a broken tendon.

The mastbase has a cylindrical top end which slots inside the hollow cylindrical base of the carbon-fibre mast

The mast itself has a 48.5mm internal diameter at the base where it sleeves over the mast-base upper section. The mast is 4.65m long according to the specs panel and is a single section.

I just want to try out windsurfing and if I like it I will upgrade it properly with better kit or get a new set of gear altogether.

Thanks

Doh - just realised there is a restriction on newbies posting pictures - is there any way to get around this restriction so I can show the pictures of the setup? - which was the reason for signing up ...

Can anybody advise how many forum posts I need before I can post pics of the mast base in question?

Thanks

Out of all the old bits that are impossible to get, Tyronsea is strangely still being sold on eBay and in some stores (surf sail aust?)

Or, a modern base is not hard to adapt, do some googling

I have a bunch of Tyronsea bits laying around in Perth. When I started sailing again the modern masts were larger diameter so I sleeved the extension with reticulation pipe. Surf and Sail still have the boge joints as far as I know.

Rob, do you have any of those old diameter extensions lying a round? They are a perfect fit for my Matrix 5s

If the hourglass uni joint/tendon is broken, it is simply a matter of replacing it with a new one. The BOGE ones work very well. Use Nylock sainless steel nuts.

Mike,
I might still have some Tyronsea Mast Sleeves, I will check.
From memory they are 44mm ID x 48mm OD.
Tyronsea Extensions were smaller than the modern ones so it might not be the sleeve you need.

Thanks for all the advice. Much appreciated.

My picture posting privileges have been fast-tracked by kindly Admin Laurie. Thank you. Pictures above.

I am in QLD Gold Coast

It is just the rubber hourglass tendon that has snapped.

A longer term solution would be to upgrade the whole thing to a newer system I guess. But for an intermediate solution to let me put my toe in the water I was hoping to just get the existing set-up working if possible.

The measurements are on the carbon fibre mast for the existing mast-base insert. There is no mast foot extension on this old setup. Just mast straight onto mast-base.

Just replacing the actual rubber hourglass tendon would be ideal if I can find the part.

Nothing on eBay at the moment under Tyronsea unfortunately.

Looking down inside the mast-base mast sleeve (into which the base of the mast can be slotted) it looks like it can be disconnected from the tendon using a socket extension - if that tendon bolt is not too rusty

Can't see how the bottom part can be separated from the broken tendon

Yes replace the Hourglass joint - they should be threaded M8. You will need to put the pin in a vise - perhaps line the vise with aluminum or rubber to keep the jaws from damaging the pin then use whatever wrench you can to turn the bit of old hourglass.

All that said, if that board is what it looks like - a Bic Electric Rock, you will be getting allot more than your toe wet. It is NOT a beginner board & will be a very frustrating way to "Try out" windsurfing....

Have everything you need
Base for board, full extension set with good power joint
So all you need is your mast
I'm in Brisbane
Text me on 0409764190 if you want to collect it

Yes gorgesailor is right. Not a beginner setup at all.
You need something double the width and floaty - like 150L plus.

The Uni Joint is not a Genuine Tyronsea unless it's more than 15 years old.
Any brand Uni will fit, find a Boge style Uni with 8mm female threaded inserts.
Downside is the inserts are Aluminium.
Note: Tyronsea were Stainless Steel M8 male threads with Nyloc nut top & brass connector bottom, Loctited on.

It looks like that Uni is Female & the connection spigot will be male so put the broken bit in a vice & wrestle it apart with vise grips.
Hopefully the bolt inside the mast cup will come undone or shear off when trying to remove it.
Use Loctite (red) when re-assembling.

www.surfsailaustralia.com.au/products/search

Search for boge, you probably want the one with threads already fitted.

Make sure you use Stainless nylock nuts.

That's the exact size to fit my matrix 5s. You can't buy new ones that dia. The only possibility is the Chinook ones with a small ferrule at each end. I just cut the ferrules off and it fits.

Hey Decrepit,
I'm lucky I've still got an old extension for my kilwell masts but hard to replace.
Cheers

I've got enough extensions, but some of the ones I've modified have split at the base where the clamcleat joins. I've mounted the cleat too low, and the bottom screw hole is too close to the edge. So it would be good to have some fresh alli and mount the cleat a bit higher.
