Does anyone have any tips about recovery from exercise.
I find I when I have more than 3 consecutive days of good wind I have to take a break or I'm too buggered to enjoy it.
Also I find if I do a gym session on a Friday my sailing on the following Saturday is cut in half. In fact I can feel the deleterious effects of exercise on my sailing for two days afterwards.

Now what do I know -
Eat well and hydrate.
Sleep lots.
Mineral turps for the hands.
That's about it.

Are there any legal wonder drugs or herbal witchcraft that speed up recovery?

ummm! heres my recommendation- doctor snides prescribes- ** loads of (more)sailing, especially in light winds, (using a boom with good grip)! buy yourself a wally if need be.
its the only way to improve stamina for windsurfing.

IMO htfu and flick the gym your only going to put yourself in an early grave by wearing yourself out...body is not much different to a car...the more you use it the quicker it devalues.

disclaimer: i am not a doctor (how ever i am a plumber and like doctors we bury our mistakes also) so dont take my advice seriously

There are several methods.

Natural is stretch lots ie before sailing, afterwards and also the morning following. Keep mobile after sailing and the following morning go for walk or bike etc (swimming is perfect as it works whole body).

Non-natural is with supplements and recovery aids such as creatin which I don't recommend.

Finally plan and adapt your sailing, if it is a forecast like this week shorten your sailing sessions or plan to have break day. Personally I find shorter high intensity sailing sessions work better and you can sail more days.

Drink beer afterwards. Replaces all those vital electrothingies that you lose while sailing. Works for me *hic*

Yeah I think having a few beers works quite well. Beer relaxes your body and you can have a good sleep afterwards. A good sleep is the key to recovery.

I am not a doctor either but it is believed that working the same muscles day after day weakens them and they do not have enough time to repair so if you know you are windsurfing the next day, probably not do arms / back / legs etc. Actually dont train... During exersize sweetened drinks are good like Gatorade or Powerade as they help replace lost minerals that is required to aid in recovery. Breaks every half an hour for 5 minutes is also good.

OR harden up!

Might see you on the water tomorrow

stretch after excercise and eat straight after to refuel your energy supplies. get lots of sleep and eat healthy.

stretching is the main thing though.

I find that after a hard session windsurfing (or anything else that requires intense forearm activity for that matter BillyBoy!!!) a good stretch works wonders. Try to pull your fingers towards the top of your wrists and hold for ten seconds. Shoulder and upper back stretches also help. Perhaps it helps disperse the lactic acid that has built up during the session.

Gestalt, generally after a days windsurfing I haven't even got the energy for sex!!!

Hey NW,

Take a tip from a personal trainer.

Unless you are into the roids (which aid in recovery) not build muscle like most people think, then I would suggest you take a bit of a rest. Ask yourself this Q

Could I work out at the gym every day and work the same muscles.

The Answer = YES, BUT you will not be able to function the same way as on the first day. ie: you will be Fu*%d. Your body needs time to recover.

When you work a muscle or put it under extreme load you are in fact tearing the muscle(Microfibre Tears) then when you rest and eat a proper nutritious meal that's when the muscle builds and repairs.

Have you heard of DOMS Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness. Very common, as most people take on average of 2 days before soreness sets in.

Of course you can supplement with things like L-Glutamine for Recovery & Repair, most Triathletes will use L-Glutamine on a daily basis.

If however, you have had a very heavy session then you may need to look at replacing your electrolyte levels with something like Hydralyte. Keep up your intake of water but include a hydrating mix.

For crist's sake man "Your not Superman" Or are you!!!!

Are you mild manered?

Can you leap tall WindSurfers in a single bound?

Look up in the sky: It's a Bird, It's a plane NO, It's NotWal

Do you wear your underpants on the OUTSIDE?

Stay Safe Bloke !

P.S Someone mentioned Creatine - No NO No

Creatine is a Water Retention, taking creatine is for helping you bulk up and making your muscles look fuller.

AND as a Windsurfer I am guessing you get enough water with the occasional Dunking. Ha Ha!

As said go for the stretching, before after and whenever you think of it, unless your under 30 and still bulletproof. The rest of have to look after the old bod.
As for sex....I thought we rode boards cos they don't get headaches and can ride them all month long

you could pack in more windsurfing and a few extra training sessions during the week. that way in a few months once your fitter a normal windsurf session will not seem so hard and that will help you go longer.

Funny you should say that about "'roids" (anabolic steroids) because I was thinking of asking my GP about that. The adverse symptoms seem to accrue to huge overdosing that the body builders typically engage in. I wonder if small doses will shorten recovery time without buggering your liver. As I understand it they are effectively synthetic testosterone. For me it would perhaps be like HRT. I am 58, and if I am to be realistic ... No. Where there's life there's hope and hope isn't about reality. Reality is for dead people.

As for working out every day - I see elite athletes (iron men, swimmers, cyclists ...) do work hard every day with maybe one day off a week. I wonder how they do it. Their bodies must be in a permanent state of recovery.

As for taking time off to rest, that's easy to say but when you get wind as rarely as we do if it blows you sail if you possibly can. So we sail 'til its time for the induced coma.

L-Glutamine you say, I'll give that a go, and stretching.
