Hi all thinking of taking the plunge and investing in a raceboard and a severne raceboard 9.5 sail.I weigh 80kg , what size sail should I be looking at as a smaller sail to use, was thinking around 8.5 but does it have to be a raceboard sail for the heavier conditions, wouls a reflex or pryde evo be suitable

Hi Mate,

An 8.5 would be ideal. I way 80kg and have a 8.6 Reflex as my second sail. Heavier guys have up to 9.5 slalom sail but they're 'huge dudes'. I reckon the NP Evo would be fast.

The Raceboard 9.5 is a must though as the first sail.

When do they start cancelling races these days? I did my last Raceboard event in 2010, but Back In The Day you would want a 6.6. Mind you, being an old fart I remember the day when Big Phil McGain resorted to a 4.5 wavesail to get around the course.

Actually I think the bigger guys are keeping their 9.5 Slalom sails up until it's so windy the race is abandoned at around 30knts. I can hold onto an 8.6 up until then.
If you're on an RXS (with a 9.5) you don't have a choice. ...and women have to use the 8.5.

...and no doubt this is all miniature compared to Formula.

So I suppose thats how far sail design has come.

...Oh McGain he wouldn't do that again...

I think the sails really have improved a lot.

I've been on an old IMCO 7.4 and just recently took delivery of an 8.4 Barracouta custom for use on my D2 board. I was thinking I'd have to get a second smaller sail for the days that are pushing 30. However the first few sails are suggesting that I'll be far more comfortable in the over 20 range with this new 8.4 compared to the old 7.4.

I'm 78kgs. Riding a DB2 and now a Lechner a390.

hi,
Raceboard 8.5's are not necessarily high wind sails, most are intended to be used by the youth and women classes that are restricted to 8.5 and need to work in light winds.
I have a RB8.5 as my second sail but would be better off with a reflex in 20+.

Thanks for the advice guys, will wait and try out the 9.5 and see how it goes in the windier weather and then if dequired have a look around for something in the 8.4 size

I have a 9.5 but there are days it is just too much for it. I was thinking to buy a dedicate 8.5 raceboard sail, but think will try my 8.4 NP RSS a few times to see how it goes. I think when underdownhauled should work reasonably well.

Hi Doug, Would said Reflex for high wind by preference be an 8.5 or 9.5 ?

hi Mikey,
probably the 8.6, that seems to be what most are using locally, i haven't tried one yet.

i too have an A390, i like my RB8.5 on that.
