Hi all, first time poster here, I am currently in the "get the balls to go for it" stage too. I can offer a few tips from my own experience. I have been going for vulcans which have really helped me to try a forward as the start of it is kinda similar. The only difference is that you need to sheet in rather than leaving the sail stationary. Going for a vulcan has given me alot more confidence to go for the forward. Doing catapults with the sail only while just off the plane helps too, it gives you the same sensation of the rotation and landing on your back. I find that looking at my clew helps heaps!

crickey, what sort vulcans are these

i once saw a vid with ricardo trying to do a forward loop into vulcan

but i agree, vulcans certainly increase the self confidence for other things

personally - i reckon learning to grubby is a good one to practice to help do beginner forwards where you just want to get onto your back. A lot of the stuffed grubbies end up becoming semi horizontal loops. They require you to stand upright heading downwind, sheeting in very briefly as you pop the board, land nose first, but then sheet out a little instead of still sheeting in, and you do not pull feet up unlike with a loop, but the start of the move is very similar.

nebbian I'm going out for a sail in an hour or so. I am going to attempt my first ever forward loop. If I don't post back here within a day with some degree of success I want everyone to call me a blouse wearing poodle walker

I ****n broke my mast 5 minutes into sail. Doing a chop hop of all things. Didn't even crash or anything, it just gave way.

I swear this is a genuine excuse and is in no way a case of wussiness

You're not suggesting Bails should lie about how he broke his mast are you? Cos its too late.

Boujmaa does a vulcan (or really a spock) into forward loop at the end of The Windsurfing Movie and pulls it off nicely.

Try forwards at the end of a cr@p day when you're angry because the wind was up and down and you sailed like cr@p. Use this anger to go for it. It will turn a bad day into one of the best ever. Worked for me.
