Yoohoo planing freaks!
I'm wondering if you've ever tacked somehow with so much speed that you were able to plane right back out.
Thinking it needs lots of power, a big board (i.e. freestyle) and somehow carve and pump downwind to keep the plane maybe on a swell or wave?
Sounds challenging and impossible...!?
It's possible, if you're quick, the wind is strong, and you consider planing with your feet forward of the straps as planing.
Just go to a race. The best little guys plane thru even on 12' boards. Gephardt and Teddy for sure. And lightweight freestylers plane thru tacks lots of times.

What do you mean planing out of tack? I generally swim out of a tack! ![]()
Switch to other side and keep the plane as we carve upwind, then pump like crazy to keep going without dropping.
Get a foil! Racers plane through foils, at least in training videos when the water is flat and nobody else is around. Some of the best freestylers foil through duck tacks and heli tacks. I saw Andy Brandt almost foil through several duck tacks in the last few days; he touched down briefly at the end, and probably kept planing speed through the entire turn.
Staying on the foil through upwind in a tack is pretty easy. My big foilboard definitely still planes when I touch down during the foot switch, but I'm too slow and clumsy to keep it planing. Even in decent tacks, my speed usually drops to 2.5 - 3 knots. But that's with a slow foil (SS i84). Coming in with a race foil at ~ 2x the entry speed should make it easier to keep planing speeds.
Right but foiling is a bit like skating. I can plane through many moves on my skate which is a lot of fun but more apparent wind related. The challenge as you know on a classic windsurf is to maintain the plane. I could point super high on my formula board at the tack but the fin would make it super slow to carve and head back downwind. While on a freestyle board we can pivot off the back much quicker.
Please do post your vids if you have some super fast tacks. I remember seeing some from the 90s, yet, they are not focused on keeping the plane just tack tack.
I think tacking off of a steep wave early and then use it to ride down. Timing has to be perfect and the wave must be sufficiently powerful!

Post Video's, or it didn't happen. ![]()
Tacking fast as you can on a board with no grip= crushed nuts!
It's worse with square rails
I eagerly await some footage of someone planing out of a tack on normal gear.
Already footage out there of planing tacks on foils, but on normal kit the best tacks i've seen still involve a full stall.
I've just about managed it a few times but as I have no footage of it, who can believe me?!??
however, on the continent seven website I'm pretty sure there's a video of Jaeger (who arguably has the best non racing tacks in the world) doing one in pozo I think
