Gday all Ive been windsurfing since the early 90s on and off (off last 5 years) my question is well I've never sailed modern gear only 90s stuff my last board was an f2 ride 295 which I think it was a pretty quick bay board before that I was on a budget and ended up buying a fairly fat strapper glass board which I took over to rye one day on a 25kt northerly whilst setting up there was quite a few there mainly guys that looked like they really knew what they were doing all the big dollar looking boards (and cars) a couple of them even made the effort to come over and ask me where I picked up the classic dinosaur from??well at the risk of sounding like a dick that dinosaur spent the next couple of hours running laps around 20 other sailers bar 1 or 2 on the day to there surprise ..the other boards I sailed in my teens where mainly trigger bros custom made slaloms and speed boards also had a cobra 290 gun also a cobra tandem setup a pair of old Wild winds Peter Jackson blue water classic 9m and a 10m sails was a bit of fun on the light days..so looking around for second hand setup and wondering how the More modern type boards go compared to the old 90 types for moderate to high wind bay sailing? Thanks for any helpful tips..cheers Steve

LOL. Some of the fastest guys I know are 2nd hand sail sluts. No tips from me (I'm too new), but good on ya, and a great intro post

Anyway, I better go crash a govt server now.

Well, i cant say ive taken a ride on anything born before 2008, but everything ive seen and been told is modern gear is just easier to ride, not necessarily faster.

of course theres old, then there's too old. Theres a cut off there somewhere where old loses out.

There was a video where Maciek Rutkowski (PWA slalom sailor) enters a race on an older board (can't remember if it was a 90's or early 2000's board) he still wins, but his remarks were that the board was quick, gybes were harder to make, and the board was noticeably harsher to ride.

Nothing like a bottom feeder that comes out about once every 2 years and flogs everybody for a half hour before their crusty gear blows up.

Nah.
You forget......NONE of us windsurf nearly as well as our gear can perform.
Good 1995 gear, especially sails, can easily stay with 2021 sails.
And if you had 1995 Bringdal skills, you'd dust 80% of the current pro fleet. And 100% of rec sailors.

There has been significant improvement in sail design since the early 80's when I started, but with all things, innovation can plateau. What happens is that sail makers/designers pushed to market something new and better EVERY year simply can't achieve that goal year after year and occasionally regress to something not as good as previously on the market.

Progression in sail design (and masts) was very rapid in the 80's and 90's, then started to slow down a bit to where we are today - not much better than 10-15 years ago. That can vary from sail brand to sail brand.
