I think there is the answer to the "jibe problem" of current fins vs foil. There are some ultra fast jibes here and it might be because of the much longer boards we used to ride!

"Old style" surf slalom was just amazingly fun. It was so much more about boardhandling and handling and using the waves than flat water slalom, which has never done anything for me because it seems a bit one-dimensional (although I respect those who love it).

The "old style" slalom we had in Oz was normally part of the short lived pro circuit and modern amateur organisation doesn't have the cash or volunteers to take over a whole city surf beach in the same way, but I think there's a few spots in the country where you could run an event a bit like pro surf slalom without pro organisation.

I remember the Surf Slalom off Brighton Beach in WA. It was mint.
