i recently put an ad up locally looking for a sabre or similar sailboat and ending up coming home with this after I got a call from an old chap, does any one have any info on the maker as Google didn't bring up anything, and does it look like all the stuff is there and how do I rig it up I haven't sailed for 30 yrs...

Will be hard to do planing jibes...

Tie the front of the boom to the mast and the clew of the sail to the back of the boom, insert the mast into the mast foot and off you go

Cheers, I just found some old posts how to tie the boom to mast, does the mast get tied to the board it looks like there provisions for this and was quite unstable when I just put it up in the yard..

You gotta stand up and hold onto it, or else it will fall over

YES

the black piece sticking out of the deck in photo #1 is called the mast foot
it is usually attached securely to the "board" via a clip of some sort
also, the downhaul string from the sail - the one at the bottom of the pole/mast should tie to the mast base
OR the black collar on the mast attaches to the mast base somehow

looks like old stuff that can be a lot of fun

I'd ditch the rig and use something made this century.

Well, it certainly won't be "easy" paddling 3 or 4 klms back to land when your rig falls apart.

I think Mobydisc was suggesting you put a modern rig on it because old gear is extremely unreliable and will more than likely leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere with a broken boom or mast.

Unless you have oars, like in the video above, then upgrading the mast, boom, universal joint and all ropes is an extremely sensible thing to do. Even brand new gear breaks... plenty of us have had to paddle back klms to shore and it's not a fun exercise.

Just like any type of boating activity, be sensible and put safety first.

Safety is your priority. Doesn't have to cost a lot but it will be more than worth it in the long run.
Particularly universal joints and aluminium booms, these parts corrode and degrade over time and you can't see it and they will break suddenly.

Plus those old booms with tie on end are rubbish. The clamp on boom is the single best improvement in windsurfing equipment ever. You can make life hard for yourself using old equipment but what is the point? If its easier you are probably going to enjoy it and do it more.

I suspect that that sort of board would be good for cruising around on those days where the wind is too light to plane.

A modern rig would make it far more usable and lighter to uphaul too. You could also strap an oar to the board in case you need it!

Or a solar powered electric outboard
