Hi guys,
I have just picked up a second hand North Duke 6.9 and am having some mast and rigging issues. The rigging advice panel on the sail says best on 460 mast ok on 430 mast... Perfect let's go ok on a 430 as that's what I have (NP 430 21) I'm only a beginner anyway.
However the luff is stated at 4.91 - 4.93 so my question is how do I make a 430 mast work with a 4.91 luff, longest extension I can find is 45cm which is still too short. Am I missing something?
I appreciate anybody's input as I'm outta ideas.

There is definitly something wrong with that mast advice. Rediculous to rig a 430 mast with 493 luff! That is pushing it even on a 460!

And even if you found a long enough extension (No standard extensions I know of go out to over 65cm!) the mast would be very soft for such a large sail.

Forget it and get a 460 mast.

does sail have an adj. top?, if it does, let out 16 cm of mast and then use a 45 cm ext. at max.

More likely the 4.91-4.93 is the misprint on the sail, I'd think its supposed to be 4.61-4.63

How many 6.9m sails rig on 490 luff?

Maui hot sails rig like that, and I have a Aerotech freespeed 5.8 that rigs on a 460.

Have you tried to rig it on the 430 just to see how it looks?, with maybe 30 cm ext. to start.

That would give 459 luff. Adjustable top reduces not extends.

That was my initial thoughts. I have sourced a 460 to loan and test it out. But I have thought all along it seemed like a misprint.. pretty big misprint by north though.

Yep put it on a 430 with a 45cm extension and it disappeared... Definitely needs a longer extension... It does say on the rigging panel 430 with carbon fibre extension. But even then I've only ever seen them to 45cm.

north use to sell a carbon extender which is a short piece that went at the bottom between the mast and extension. duotone sell them now because north became duotone

yes Gestalt is right ,had a few of these sails and my mate used a 430 with the north carbon extender plus the alloy mast extension ,I used a 460 north drop shape on mine ,great sails ..very forgiving ..

Thanks for that. I had thought maybe that was a thong but every time I googled extender I just found extension... I'm off to the duotone website now.

Thankyou all. I appreciate your help..
Looks like I'm off to find a 460 as the 40cm extender is about the same price...

Good one.

Also. As mark suggested always chase the right mast bend curve for the sail to get the full performance from the sail.

I'm not quite sure if this is going to be helpful, but my Duke 6,4 says recommended 430, but it rigs a lot better with a 460. The 430 makes it extremely flat in the top unless you are willing to accept poor batten rotation. Can't imagine the 430 in a 6,9 unless you use the carbon extender.

Look for a good Constant Curve 460 Mast, preferably North or Duotone! I sail it with North Viper XCellereator Masts, which are old, but leightweight and durable.

The sails have been designed for SDM, but a fried of mine sails them on RDMs and is delighted. Semms to make them more pumpable.

Thanks again boys it's great having such knowledgeable people at your fingertips.

One more question if I can?
I have had a local bloke reach out with an Arrows Lance 10 460mast he's willing to part with.. any opinions on how it would rig with the 6.9 duke?

bend curve should be close enough. just need to confirm the diameter of the mast fits the sail and extension. it is a heavy mast

i would only pay $50 for a mast of that vintage.

Thanks. I guess it'll do till I can afford something better.

Can the local bloke give you a try so you can rig the sail on the mast? I agree, bend curve should be ok. It's a long time ago that I used an Arrow mast though and it's probably not worth much. Rig it and see if the sail has reasonable shape and batten rotation, then see if you want to buy.
Looking for a lighter, more responsive mast in the long run would be a good thing, I guess.

Interesting memories. I remember I had exact same sail like 14 years ago. Rigged it with an extender on 430 north. Rigged well. The extender I had was full carbon (non-north) 50 or 60cm or so and was like $60 or $80. However, that Duke 6.9 was the sail with a great low end and very poor top end. It would get overpowered instantly. It was the largest sail I ever had. My experience level was a bit different back then. So hope your experience and the sail range will feel good.
