Hi everyone,
just wonding if if anyone can help me?
I purchased a Neil pride rs and starboard setup second hand.
it consits of a 9.8 and 11.3 2009 model Neil pride Rs racing sails.
it came with a Neil pride carbon mast (550) and a Neil pride adjustable out haul boom and Neil pride mast foot.
i tried to rig the 9.8 for the first time today and had lots of trouble.
the sail said on it the mast should be 530?? Sorry for the stupid question but does this mean I should put my mast foot to the lowest setting (no extension) ?
after a rigged it up I had the following issues
1) the boom was about eye level or a bit higher and seemed too high but the boom sleeve had no more room to come down
2) the cams seemed too stiff to rotate, I thought later this might have been due to the bottom webbing strap been too tight?
Is it normal to have the booms so high on the Rs formula sails?
thanks for your help,
pete
Mast should be too long for the 9.8. If the boom sleeve had no more room to come down, something is not right. Way too much downhaul or maybe the mast has been cut?
Put a tape measure on it.
I picked up some cheapish Formula gear and tried to get by with a few mast options and hated my RS6 10.7 until I got the right mast and now it works great. Funny that!
Booms cut-outs are high, but I am only 172cm. I have an old North Warp I got off a mate that is ridiculously high. Debating whether to extend the pocket to make it work for me.
Good luck.
contradicting terms - newbie vs SB Formula with 9.8 and larger sails
based on literature both the 9.8 and 11.8 (can't find 11.3) sails recommend 530 cm mast
the 9.8 is 530 + 24 cm on the base setting
so, with the 550 mast, it is as you say - NO extension
ideally you would have rigged the sail at purchase to verify settings, cambers, etc
good luck !!
Thanks guys, appreciate the quick advice.
I should have said I am a newbie to formula, out of the windsurf game for 10 yrs but before that did it heaps on short boards.
The 550 mast was about 7cm from the sail pulley so perhaps I did over tension and mabe that was why the cams were so tight. I had to tension that much though to get the bend in the mast to have it closer to the boom sleeve. (Initially it was about 25cm gap.)
i was was thinking no matter what mast a use, if the distance from the bottom of the boom sleeve to the foot of the sail is too tall any modification I make with masts or mast feet won't help? (I am about 180cm)
about 7cm from the sail pulley
based on earlier discussion there should be NO distance between the pulleys on the mast extension and the pulleys on the sail
perhaps 1 - 2 cm , but NOT 7
sounds not like you pulled too much, but perhaps not enuff
once again - good luck
the 9.8 is 530 + 24 cm on the base setting
so, with the 550 mast, it is as you say - NO extension
530 + 24 = 554
Sounds like he needs and extension to me.
After reading Joes specs. It would seem you might not have had enough down haul.
Are you using a winch. No way I can get enough down haul on my 10.7 without it. Scares me even with the winch as I am waiting to hear the pop.

agreed there is no way you will get that down without a winch? or at least not without trouble?
