G'day all, new to windsurfing and finally managed to work out how to use this site (damn cookies).
I'm going to be in Brisbane in May (anybody else going to the Brooks&Dunn concert?) and was wondering what the chances were of getting a decent breeze. Just working out whether to book a few extra nights there, and where's the best area to go?

Also, does anybody have any info about windsurfing around the South Pacific Islands? From what I can find, New Caledonia seems pretty good. Anybody have personal experience? Best time of year, cost, safety, all the basics....

Brissy in May is sketchy to zero. You might catch a front though.

I used to live in Brisbane and found Wellington Point on the east side of town a good place for a ride. In most winds there is somewhere to ride (only trouble is the mud at low tide). If you can, go mid week because parking can be hard to get.

bad time of year for brissy and the gold coast area.
very hit and miss.
But you never know, could have no wind for a week or could have the session of your life.Damn you summer, why cant you hang around all year??????
good luck.
but hey,if the wind is a bit too light for a sail, you could always try kiteboarding
I can lend you some fancy board shorts

A windsurfer can enjoy themself with a board and sail from around 2 knots of wind. Play around doing light wind tricks on a big board. The sail size doesn't matter.

If you want to enjoy an endless summer of wind in Australia, from the GPS Challenge site its clear you have to spend 'winter' in Far North Queensland and summer in WA. If I win Lotto or do something else that negates the need to work I'll be doing this.

Thanks for the replies people. I spose I'll bring my gear down and hope for a flukey bit of breeze

"Lotofwind" thanks for the offer, but I dont think the yellow and red polka dots, which seem popular, will go with my rig

I reckon the summer dream sounds good, "mobydisc", with a bit of Pacific Island hopping thrown in.

I have been to New Caledonia in July and conditions were OK, I sailed four out of seven days. It had been a pretty ordinary year for wind according to the hire dude, he suggested that September was the most consistent time of the year. Its all pretty protected inside the reef and seemed very safe. The number of local sailors surprised me but I guess the sport is petty huge in both France and its colonies. The hire operation was pretty small.

I was there eight years ago so things may have changed since then.
