Hi all

I'm coming from Ireland to Perth to live in a few weeks time.

I've been sailing for 15 years or so, I weigh 85kg, and I much prefer waves to flat water - but I'll take what I can get! I'll happily sail 4.0m and my largest sail has been 6.8m - but this is bigger than I really enjoy sailing.

I have three boards here in Ireland and am wondering which (if any) to bring with me. They are a 76L, an 85L (which I really like and have pretty much decided I will bring) and a 95L freewave.

Any advice will be much appreciated:
- should I bring all three of these?
- what are typical summer and winter windstrengths?
- should I think about gear for light wind / flat water as well as strong wind / waves?

Plus anything else that anyone thinks would be useful or interesting for a windsurfer new to WA

Sorry if this is already covered somewhere in these forums - I've had a look round and couldn't find what I was looking for. Thanks in advance for any help!

Stuart

Yes
2hrs either side of Perth is World class wavesailing ranging from 2ft to 20ft.
The more equipment and variety you have the better.
Plent of flat water sailing too, and the waves acn get pretty good in the metro area.

Perth area gets its best waves at the extreme ends of the seabreeze season, so it's good to have a wave board that you're happy slogging on. Mid season swell is small and far apart, winds can occasionally hit 30kts but are more often around 20kts.

Winter is storm sailing, big waves with strong onshore winds when it happens, most of the time it's about 5kts dead onshore.
So I'd say you'd probably miss anything you left behind.
whether it's more cost effective to sell your stuff first, and buy when you arrive, or pay freight is another matter.

You will use the 85 and 95 the most, and about 4.2 - 5.7 for all year round sailing, but mostly 5.2 + 5.7 in summer.
You will want that little board in winter and if travelling to say Geraldton (4hrs north) in summer.

But as Decrep says, it may be more cost effective to leave some back home and buy stuff here, there is plenty of gear in the shops. You will get another small board for winter easily in 5mths time when it is needed

Yeah the 76 & 85 are perfect for local wave-sailing. I've got a 70l which is great for high winds, but it doesn't get as much use as my 80l. Your 95 would be good for the lighter days.

- what are typical summer and winter windstrengths?

It's pretty much windy most days, a lot of guys don't bother sailing on a light seabreeze (< 18knts) but a few have bigger boards & sails, so your 6.8 might come in handy. My biggest sail is a 5m, but I've got a beginner board I sometimes use with it. Summer is pretty consistent, winter is generally storm winds so is pretty variable.

- should I think about gear for light wind / flat water as well as strong wind / waves?
Plenty of light days so it's always handy to have big sails & boards. But a lot of guys don't bother as it can get quite $$ trying to have gear to suit all conditions. I think your sail range (4 - 6.8) and 3 boards should mean you can get out planing 70% of the time during summer.

Plus anything else that anyone thinks would be useful or interesting for a windsurfer new to WA

Leave your booties, hoodie and gloves behind! You'll look like a tourist!

Do you mean Nollamara? What suburbs are you looking at living in?

North of the river you have:

Cott - Dutch Inn - right handed reef break 100m off beach
Scarborough - a right/left hand beach break
Mettams - a left hand reef break 100m of the beach (like dutch inn - needs a lot of swell)
Watermans -
Hillarys - Little Island/Seal Island - right hand reef break 2km from the coast. But you can swim to the island if you break stuff.
Hillarys - Pinnaroo Point flat water/bump and jump
Lancelin - an hours drive, but worth it on a good day.

I wish I lived in WA.. I reckon I'd be wavesailing if I lived there.I like the idea of the break being offshore with flat water inside..( + consistant wind!)
