Stole this image from a non resurrectable thread. My extensions aren't as bad but bad enough to require repair.
What's your latest best fix for this?
Would solarez work well enough in this situation?
This is a problem even with the two pin clips. Basically the pins corrode, get loose in their plastic clip. The pins' play and rough aspect then grind the holes larger.
My booms are simmer, can I use the generic aeron two pin clips to replace?
I think the newer simmer booms are Aeron older ones don't know. Any ext. that Is that damaged I would say good luck fixing ,have not seen that happen in a long time some of the early carbon booms and extensions did that because wall thickness was not enough. Solarez is like a bandaid good for small dings etc not for major repairs.
Yeah like many of those things... get a $800 boom made with 5ct pins.
In the meantime, I have gaastra and severne double-pin clips that I can try and maybe some old carbon extensions that may fit.
How about stainless steel rivets instead of repair?
I just don't see how well the repair can hold if the area is too small, I need to sand down existing material to get more carbon in there, correct?
Just turn the tail piece upside down and drill new holes ?????
Genius solution ![]()

Genius!
Laminate a tight fitting (carbon) tube in the tube of the vario boom end.
Then fill the slot with layers of carbon/glass fabric and epoxy resin.
Instead of carbon, you can also screw in a piece of aluminum or something else that you like.
Cover it with a layer of carbon, sand to the correct diameter.
Drill holes, a little spit on it and you're good to go : )
oh, and look for what caused it...
Thanks for the input and food for thoughts/action.
Pick your corrosion...

Can you clarify how you cut the fabric pieces over the enlarged holes?
On top the inner tube (in place/laminated in the outher tube) fill the now blind slot (what is missing) with carbon layers stacked on eachother till it levels with the the outer tube.
And finish it with a thin layer on the outher tube.

Using really tiny pieces of carbon? I've had trouble keeping the strands together when it's this small they tend to fall apart when squeezing the resin out.
I have used wall anchors that I epoxy glued inside footstrap inserts maybe that's an additional solution. I can drill them easily too.
Would you happen to have a video link about something similar? Sorry for being such a noob.
Now I'm understanding that this shouldn't happen unless one has corroding pins.
I should have changed the clips way before then. They seem to be inexpensive (well that explains it :D !!!).
For now, I used the severne and gaastra clips, and used better fitting extensions so the fit is nice and tight and worn out holes don't line up with required extension for the sail until holes are fixed.
Rip the foam out
sleeve it with some carbon or glass tube with a 2-3mm wall thickness. Only needs to be 20cm long or so
Make sure the sleeve is glued in all around with a solid epoxy like JB Weld or similar. fill the old holes with same
re-drill holes
As an aside - those end clips corrode as u see in the pics
it'd annoying as it splits the plastic. I've found they have to be washed well so I used to stand mine in a bucket of fresh water in the garage after every session. that's only thing I didn't like about the otherwise indestructible Simmer booms
but they don't damage the carbon Manuel it's just wear
Just turn the tail piece upside down and drill new holes ?????

You should keep aluminium away from carbon. You'll get galvanic corrosion if they're not scrupulously isolated.
GasHazard: I stand corrected!
Below all compoments carbon/glass sticked together with epoxy resin:
Instead of zigzag lines (carbon/glas fabric) you can glue something tight fitting solid that doesn't interact with carbon like aluminium : )
For strength you can put a layer of carbon on top and sand the diameter till it fits again.

What Mark said, also you can get pulltruded (cheaper) carbon tubing from "Play with carbon" for around $18.00. Then laminate some 3k twill over the top and with a bit of a tidy up, she'll be good as new.
Rooooooh thank you! Much clearer now. The ends of one extension are shut plugged solid. It'd have to be drilled out I guess.
