Hi Guys
I love my Simmer sails, but Simmer seem to only be importing their more popular wave sails (black tip etc) and not their race-orientated sails. I use, and love, the 2XC in 6.0 and 7.1, which are both twincam and rig beautifully on my Chinook RDM 100% RDM 430/21 CC.
I recently needed to replace my 5.5 and purchased a secondhand 5.4 Overdrive, but I'm a bit suspect on how it sets on my Chinook mast. It looks to rig a bit flat, but I haven't used it yet and have never had a Severne before, so I'm not sure if that's just the way they are. I can get the leech nice and loose and the cams rotate perfectly. But, I'm a bit skeptical given I've read these sails rig best on lower carbon content masts. I'm not buying a mast just for one sail....
Which brings me to my next question. I also need to fill the gap between my 7.1 and 6.0, and was considering a Maui Sails Titan GS because the price is good and I like the less full-on luff sleeve with 2 or 3 cams thrown in for some nice shape.
However, I'm worried that I'll end up with 3 different brands of sail. You know, if I was rich I would just go all out and buy 4 or 5 Severne Turbos... 5-7m and have 1 mast to suit all. Which would also mean that I get used to the feel on the same sail across the entire wind range, which is why I like my Simmers... I can jump from one to the other and they behave the same and I know what to expect.
So I'm wondering if others here have different brands in their quiver and whether you have different masts to suit?
The reason I have different brand sails is because I'm pretty much stuck with whatever secondhand options are available in my size and price... Should I just save my money for (about) 12 months and go all out and buy an entire quiver of brand new Overdrives (froth!!).
Thanks
Nigel
Hey Nigel, i think there might be an issue trying to use the OD on the RDM mast.
Any sail with cams is going to be designed for either SDM or RDM masts. Some (i think koncepts?) come with extra sets of cams so that you can switch between different kinds of masts.
I have had 6.5, 7.5 Titan's in the past and they were really nice sails. I upgraded to race sails which are more stable but a bit heavier. The titans are designed for an SDM mast. I used the 6.5 on a 430/55% and 7.5 on 460/75%. I have a TitanGS 9.0 that I use as my high wind Formula sail.
Rather than froth over a quiver of ODs (which need SDM mast), maybe consider a quiver of Titan's with an SDM mast to suit?
If you don't want to buy a new mast (understandable) see if you can find a sail that works on RDM. I know the Maui Switch (no cam, 6 batten) works well on RDM and maybe the pursuit/scream (no cam 7 batten). Not sure about other brands.
Ideally, its best if you can to get a quiver of sails from the same brand, with masts that match. Nothing worse than spending money on gear that doesn't match that you don't enjoy.
Hi 2035,
Simmer has run into a overbooked factory this year so the 2015 flatwater range has been delayed and only the wave sails are available at the moment. Australian windsurfers have to remember the companies are working to have supply to the European and American markets for summer. Wave sails come out early as the wave season in Europe is Autumn to spring. So it is not that Simmer is not importing its flatwater sails it is just they are not available right now.
The best time for an Australia to buy sails is around August/September when the current years sails start being discounted. Then you have a sail for the upcoming summer season and do not have to wait for the next years range to come out. Unfortunately Simmer has sold out of all it's 2014 flatwater range so it is just a case of waiting a few months till the 2015 ones become available.
Hi Nigel - I have the issue of a mixed quiver. Bought NP 4.7, 5.4 and 6.4 with NP masts which are great. Looked for a cheap 7ish m sail for those lighter days and bought a North. It does not go well on the NP mast. Have spoken to a few blokes in regards to the mixing of sail / mast brands and have been advised that NP is the least receptive brand to other brands. So rather than buy a North mast just for one sail I an looking at a NP 7ish m sail to go with the mast I already have. Only problem is that NP seem to be one of the most expensive brands on the market. Still - will be cheaper than changing full quiver and masts. So I will be a NP owner until I win the lotto!!!
Thanks guys.
I'll try WindsurfNsnow who're in Sydney. I'm guessing they'll be able to get these in.
The sail cam with spacers, but I'm guessing there's no substitute for the actual RDM cam.
