Hey guys, I'm on a mission to kitesurf Indo in July. So many forums I've read but don't know where to go arghhh...plan would be to head somewhere maybe aceh and wing it from there travelling around kiting and exploring. Any suggestions and travelling buddies would be epic! Cheers

Perhaps you could first practise by going on a mission to the kitesurfing forums ?

With navigation skills like this it is probably best not to 'just wing it'. Perhaps consider a fully escorted tour that picks up and drops off in St Kilda, VIC, AUS. That way you might not get quite as lost ?

Sumbawa's lakeys peak/pipe is the most kited place with easy accom right on the beach and will be others there to kite with.
Dont worry about all the oldies posts above, they are just a bit pretentious since their grand kids showed them how to use the interweb thing-a-ma-jiggie

Stayed at and surfed Lakey a number of times. At low tide the wave breaks on exposed reef that sits >1ft above the water. It's also one of the most crowded spots I've ever surfed in Indo... on par with Bingin and Padang Padang. I seriously doubt you would get any action there and if you did you'd be dropping in on surfers and therefore not a very popular person.

Also the thing to keep in mind and the reason Indo is one of the best places to surf in the world is that there's no wind until early arvo and generally is offshore anyway. For wind you'd need to go there in the off season, kite the otherside of the islands.

I personally don't see how Indo is a good idea for a place to either kite or windsurf. Most spots are ankle deep and razor sharp. my surfboard fins have hit the bottom countless times whn bottom turning... that's how shallow it is. If you stacked on a kite, your gear would be shredded to pieces.

What's the attraction of kiting in Indo when so many other spots would be better IMO.

I've also been to ache, ments, Northern Sumatra and all over Java... outside of Bali, all the other spots are pretty inaccessible and quite expensive to get to and you'll need to really do your research

I don't know about kiting but there is some winsurfing action at Tabuhan Island off the western tip of Java across the straight from Bali

There are several topics if you search Tabuhan in the topic search function above

Trade winds at Lakey usually hit by midday and are cross shore, not offshore as said above??? and are straight onshore at Periscopes , very few if any surfers stay out once wind kicks in so not dropping in on surfers.
Cheap to stay at, warm water and perfect trade wind direction = good spot to kite.
Lots of kiters head to Lakeys each season, surf all morning, eat a nasi goreng then kite all arvo then drink cold bintang as the sun goes down.....heaven.

Plenty of kite vids of pipe, peak and nugas(spelling?) on youtube, but here is the first that popped up, shows mainly lakey pipe.

If you want an organised trip to indo with less hollow waves, I think kitepower do trips to lombok, nice spot with softer waves.

Wow... that video doesn't do Lakey justice... 2-3ft slop and 2 second barrels. If someone wants to travel all that way to kite such trash, then you're welcome to it. Give me G-land any day... no kiters out there when it's on

Also, I was talking generally about wind direction in Indo in the dry season, not specifically Lakey. Many more spots blow off shore in the trades than onshore. Much of the ments are just one case in point.

Back to the original post...

I would agree that the Kuta area of Lombok would be one of the best places, but I'm only going off my experience there as a surfer.

Lotofwind, I want to see some footage of you kiting at the peak, and then some footage of when you come ashore and all the locals sort it out.
No surfers at the peak when the wind comes in? Where'd you get that one from?
Good luck with your next Indo trip tosser

Yes its packed with surfers when its blowing as you can see in this recent pic.

Locals are great, run out your lines, launch and land your kite.
One of the locals even does kite repair there now as lots of kiters head there.
Sounds like you haven't been there in season when all the kiters are there each year.
Yes, you can see the hundreds of surfers out in the vids when its windy lol Must have photo shopped them out ay lol

The Indo locals will do nearly anything for the right price But you can't buy yourself out of trouble if you drop-in on one of them And I've see plenty of agro in the Indo line ups.

No its pipe, other side of the channel, photographer is standing on the reef in front of the peak. If the pic was with a wide lense you would see kites at the peak and nugas as well. And all the angry locals with knives waiting for them lol.
If you had trouble with the locals, dont drop in on them. I'd hit you too if you dropped in. lol
You guys say its too shallow, angry locals and no good to kite?? when hundreds kite there and enjoy it every year with no problems.

Jamie87, you will be better to talk to all the kiters that actually go there to get advice from, dont listen to the negative nancy poledancers, lol.
Next they will tell you of the local tiger sharks, killer sea snakes and rampant malaria lol.

That's where I kite surf and windsurf.
Forget about Bali if you look for wind.
We have about 20 knots every day in our windy season, end May till end October.
Flat water for free styling.
And if you look for waves, come on our boat 2 hours south and hit the G-Land rights for some rights.
