we have had a few lessons from a few people in Maui,

I can highly recommend Matt Pritchard, he is full of energy and great to sail with, picks up on technique and WILL teach you what you want to do. We had hime for a few lessons a few years back and he taught us to quick tack. Pretty sure he can offer a video service as well.

All of the shops can offer lessons as well, we have always run stuff through Dave and Suzie at Action Sports Maui (001118088715857 (geez I hope i get commission)
But they will be able to match an instructor to your ability and what you want to learn, if Derek Mangan is on the island get him!

Have a great trip Yuppy. You can organise tuition through Alan Cadiz at HST - their desk is inside Hi Tech Surf in Kahului. They have some very good sailors there as instructors.

You can also rent Quatro / Mauisails gear right there in the same place - no booking required, they have heaps of stuff.

There will be no one left in Australia at this rate!

I'm planning on getting a lesson from Matt depending on how confident I'm feeling a week in.

Depending when you want to go - as to the chance of getting into waves.....

Clinic wise the only such thing on the island that i Know of are the aloha clinics that Matt P and Shawn Cropas run.

For individual lessons then I'd go with Matt for sure. He can also sort you out for gear and accom if need be.

Our summer is their winter, so now would be a good time. In saying that the wind is stronger (maybe gustier) in their summer

If you want a wind guarantee (well almost) June - aug generally honks every day. Swell is non existent. Wave season is basically now, but the chance of wind is much less. Shoulder seasons are great say march - may or sept - nov. March and April are generally photoshoot months, so there can be lots of pro's on Maui, which can make trying out ho'okipa daunting. But if you are learning, then the lowers wave is super safe and can give long rides.

Now if you are really doing this to learn how to wave sail, then ditch the Maui idea all together and head to baja. Punts San Carlos (www.solosports.net/). Matt runs a wave sailing clinic here 3 times a year. Gem Hall also runs clinics here and a few other pro's. it is super safe, perfect cross off, long rides upwards or 10 bottom turns are possible. Starboard tack (same as Maui). April is spring over there, and is more reliable for wind, however there is bigger swell in their summer (opposite to Maui). PSC faces south and gets its swell from winter storms down in the Tasman and off NZ.

Hope this helps.

I'm there in April this year. Going to catch up with MP, and get him to tune my wave sailing. I've got a mate from NZ heading over as well.

Yep looking to learn to catch a wave properly, I think there's a range a abilities they can take on their clinics but the video on matts website shows people learning to wave ride and jump. I am that excited, 5 weeks to go

Hey dam71, isn't Maui better than baja? The warm Hawaii water surely beats wearing a 4:3 wetsuit. I'm from Vic so I like the thought of sailing in board shorts.
