I recently had a week of coaching with Shawna, and thought Id post this here in case anyone is thinking of doing something like this.
Shawna has a lot of experience in coaching and instructing windsurfing across all levels. I first knew of her from the UK nearly 20 years ago, where she was well known for her windsurf travel and tuition articles and photos in the Boards magazine, and for the legendary clinics she ran with Guy Cribb around UK and Europe. A few years ago, I heard she'd moved to Maui, and was running clinics there, so I went on a few and improved and learned a lot, plus had great fun windsurfing with others on the clinics from all over.
I've always enjoyed group clinics, but this time having a week of one on one coaching was amazing. I improved on a range of things from light wind water starts, catching waves, fast blasting and improving gybes. Just being out on the water sailing with someone of this level was so much fun. We moved around Maui throughout the week, making plans each day once we knew what the wind was doing. We also did other things like paddle boarding on the beautiful south shore, and going up to the Haleakala volcano crater to see the sunset. The windsurfing coaching was out on the water, and also through photos and video Shawna took from on the water and from the beach.
I rented equipment from Adventure Sports and had a whole quiver of brand new 2017 NP sails, JP boards, carbon masts and booms. I was massively spoilt by Adventure Sports, and given lots of extra gear over the usual rental package, to make sure I got the most out of the week with Shawna. Id really recommend this type of coaching if you're planning a trip to Maui and want to get better, as well as getting into the Maui windsurfing vibe with someone who lives, surfs and windsurfs there. Shawna runs group coaching as well as one on one lessons.
