My heart goes out to our many friends on Maui, especially in the hard-hit towns of Lahaina and Kihei which it seem to have taken the brunt of the damage so far. I'm praying for their safety.
Not much in the local news here but I've been following online and I'm blown away by how extreme this has been for everyone on Maui.
as a species we are in serious trouble.
Pretty shocking footage I've seen on Facebook. For context the destruction to Lahaina would be like the center of Byron Bay or Margret River completely burning to the ground. Really lost for words.

Not much in the local news??? It was the lead story on Channel 7 last night and all morning today on Sunrise! Where do you get your news???
I stayed in Lahaina for a week in June 2022. Kind of blown away that the entire town is just gone, including a number of historic buildings from the early colonial days. It was a really nice place that found a good balance between being a fun place with a bit going on without turning into a tourist megaresort complex like Kaanapali down the road. All the best to everyone over there with rebuilding and moving on with their lives but it's sad to think about how different it's all going to look if I ever make it back.
time for those big ugly resorts to step and help the locals out - they have generators, shelter and food.
