if you're on your own stay at the Greenhouse Paia and rent a car from Kimos (kimosrentacar.com), thats all you need to know

Robbo is on the money. Kimos is the place for car hire. They will leave the car waiting for you at the airport. You dial a number when you arrive (make sure you have a couple of quarters to use the pay phones in front of the luggage belts) and they give you the code to a lock box inside the vehicle. Car is left unlocked, you open the lock box with your code, get the keys and the parking stub and off you go !
*You should factor in needing to get fuel as you leave the airport but then it's done !
On your departure you pre-arrange what time you will drop the car back (tell them you need an airport drop) and one of their guys simply jumps in at the Kimos Depot and drives you round the corner to the airport in the same car so you don't have to double handle your gear.
You pull up kerbside, unload your gear and he drives off in the car giving you a shaka.
If you are travelling with a fair bit of gear i recommend doing the kerbside check in at the airport. Rough rule of thumb is $5 pr bag for the porters... but they will check your gear right on the spot and you're unlikely to get hit with excess luggage or board shipping fees (plus you don't have to line up inside and wait to check in) !
You can do the same thing at Honolulu airport... the porters load your gear straight out of the car and then wheel it round (past all the other punters lining up to check in on your flight) to the front of the cue. Pretty good chance you'll miss/dodge excess weight charges here also !
If you end up getting hit with charges even after paying the porter, just cop it on the chin, and think about the pay it forward principal...
I've stayed in Kihei , paia and haiku areas. By far the best experience ( not the cheapest ) was the waterfront condos in sprecks. Nice green lawns, palm trees and hammock, hot tub, views and u keep the gear rigged and walk out about 10 metres to the beach.
At the nd of the day you sip a beer in the hot tub while watching the pros / legends doing their stuff out front. ![]()
Depend when you are going. In my opinion,Nov - Mar are quite wet on the north shore, it's not raining all the time, bust mist here and there...
I remembered while i was living in Paia from Nov-Dec my clothes, rashgard was always wet(no dryer), hanging clothes inside was the only way to have a shirt who was not smelling humidity and still!
In Jan We visited Australia and our smelly shirt get destroyed by the Ozzy UV!! For the unbeated path experience Paia is the place! But from April-Oct if you are there with young kids and wife I think.
If you got some money, some nice cottages can be rent on Stable Rd, you plug your sail and go direct to Upper Kanaha from your private beach...but it's expensive! Never been to the condo's they build in sprecks..apparently it's a nice option as well!
Can't beat Paia in the dryer season, but Maui is not a place for party!! Not much night life...in Lahaina where all the tourist are maybe, but not on the north shore!
Haiku is way cooler in summer as well located if you sail hookipa, it's the first stop on the way to the beach. Stop there in the morning, have a surfing session...if the wind goes on...take a break..on the water at lunch and there you go.
Other option you were refereing too is, sunny kihei. If you want 100% sunshine and stores that's the place and when I'm with familly and wife, this is where I stay! Everyone is happy, if they don't feel going on the north shore, they stay at the pool and have blast.
You can windsurf from Maui Sunset Condo or Luana Kai In kihei. BBQ, pool, Tenis, surf and windsurf is possible and wonderfull sunset every night.
For cars, i think al west, maui van, kimo all belong to the same guy, no more price battle.
Have a good trip, i will be there in Jan, any chance to sail with you!?

Hey WW can you explain more about the 'porter' thing, are you saying slip them a tip and they will grab your gear and get it all checked through earlier than what you could??
also is this case both at maui and Honolulu ?
Heading there end of month with a 2 yr old so we have extra gear associated with little one...
The Paia Inn Bed and Breakfast, a way cool hip place in Paia, for a boutique kind of stay, you'll make new friends there.
Check it out.
