Yes, a very significant day indeed.
A day to be grateful for all the freedoms and benefits we have in our country.
Spare a minute to think of those poor buggers, including those who came back alive, for the horrors of war they experienced for the benefit of our country.
We don't have a huge amount to whinge about compared to the servicemen and women who have served in any conflict over the last 100 years.
Respect indeed.

I see the offensive posts have been removed, thanks Laurie. Probably best as Ive just watched the emotional reports from around the country and world.
Also to see the parade up Veterans Parade (my street) of all the diggers and participants is fantastic.
Best part, the amount of young people who are so into Anzac Day. great to see.
It saddens me to realise that war is still something we are taking part in.
"Lest we forget" I take to mean: "Remember the atrocities of war, and ask yourself if it's really worth it?"
I bet this is an emotional day for our servicemen and women overseas.

If Anzac Day falls on a Sunday you get a holiday but not on a Saturday, it has always been like this !!!!!!. You will get a holiday next year so stop your crying

Yes, indeed so true. I want to be careful in what I write here for fear of being seen as unpatriotic.
There were wars of all kinds. Some were religious bloody mindedness. Some were ideologically foolishness. Many were really for economical reasons. Then there were wars that promised to be "a war to end all wars".
Most of the wars were because of ..."I want a bit of yours...". So we sent our folks to rid others. Interesting enough, those other folks we want to get rid of had the same idea as we did. So there went another war !
In the last ten or so years, it is mostly about "war on terrorism". Some clever leaders thought the best way to fight it is to do it on someone else' soil, so that we don't have to deal with it on our own. Alas, that was as good as poking a stick at an hornet nest. Now we are fighting it all over the world. And on the Internet as well ! Refugees that weren't there before, now are flooding nations that are least afford to support them.
"Lest we forget"? I doubt it. We have never learned. As long as we have the means for wars, and as long as we hold divided religions, ideologies, and most of all, economic self interests, at heart, and as long as there is power imbalance, there will NEVER be peace.

It annoys me that the very guy who sent out guys to risk their life in Afghanistan is giving remembrance speech in Gallipoli.
And not to isolate him form the one before who sent them to Iraq, and the one who sent them to Vietnam, and Korea...
Bring our guys home. We may end up not needing any protection.
