Hello folks - are there better and worse times of the year to head to Lake George? What gear would you need to make sure you had everything covered?
All I know is 4 of us went in Feb 2014 and scored big time. 6 out of 8 days with light (superb glassy water) to pretty strong wind and fairly flat water. Few people from all over Oz there as well.
We went again in Feb 2015 and half the world was there. Very low water level, lots of mud and walking out and choppy.
Bone dry in 2016.
4 of us went again this Feb just gone. Very full lakes and we had a ball. Different launch spot and 4 out of 7 days great sailing but no flat water. Doesn't really matter as we loved it. Jan and Feb seem the times for strong SE sea breezes but we got winds from different directions. 2 weeks later it was honking SE so who knows.
I took 3 boards and 4 sails, same every time. Im heavy so 114, 99 and 79 Fanatics with 7.8, 7.0, 6.4 and 5.8 NP sails.
Hope this helps.
Mid January to the end of February is usually when the reliable SE winds are in. Some years there have been good winds in early March and early January.
In 2015 you could sail almost every day during this period on at least larger slalom gear, and there were periods of 5 days in a row with 25kts +.
I really don't bother taking anything larger than 6.2m and 87L slalom board and my most used combo in 2013-15 was 46cm or 40cm wide speed board and 5m-5.4m sails. If it is 12-15 knots, I just have a rest and recover day! ![]()
Looking at the forecasts and wind readings this summer, the SE'ers have been unusually absent. There was a late burst just over a weeks ago and that was pretty much it. But this year, the weather was very strange all over the SE states! We have had an unusually very low number of Easterlies at Sandy Point as well this year.
The wind seems more dense than QLD. The high salinity of the lake in 2015 also helped. We sailed 12 days in 19 during Feb. I used 4 boards: Mistrals 137 (3 days) , 112 (6 days), 91(1 day) and CA 50 (2 days). Sails ranged from 5.7 (3 days) 6.3 (2 days), 7.0 (5 days) 7.8 (1 day) & 8.5 (1 day). The winds varied from SE to SW and one day from the NW. We missed one day early in the trip because we underestimated the wind strength. There is a local acceleration effect, particularly when the wind is from the SE.
