On some rigging videos I've noticed that to downhaul (wave sails) they simply make a loop with the line and place it around their hand. This looks very useful.

What knot are they using to make the loop?

Got any example videos?

My first guess would be a bowline:

but it takes longer to tie than just wrapping the rope around your hand a couple of times and hanging on to it. Besides, you'll hurt your hand long before the rope slips!

I use a mongrel variant of the clove-hitch around my UJ connector, and just bring the loose end back underneath rather than threading it through under the cross over. Works beautifully, and there are no parts to leave behind, and no skin lost off the hands.

Ezzy has a special knot too.. I think he shows it in some of his rigging guide videos?

Yep I use this one for downhauling my 8.5 with my harness spreader bar. My smaller sails around 5-6 I can just use my hands.

I used to bowline but that's just another knot to undo.

Yer that would be a bowline, easiest way to downhaul in a hurry, can use it on most sails..

if you have anything to do with rope (we all do) the bowline is the best knot to learn. its uses are unlimited, and the best thing is that no matter how tight it is pulled it can always be easiy undone.

Mate they just appear randomly on various posts, and you have no control on what the pic is or when it may appear...Its a feature of this forum.

It still amazes me all the little, obvious, things I've missed. Using the UJ instead of a broken spreader bar I have, so obvious. Now there's nothing to put back in the car/forget to put back.

Couple of weeks back someone mentioned flying sail when water starting by sliding the sail out of the water. 1/10 i have been exhausting myself pushing. So obvious
