Hey Crew, about to get a knee operation. Cartilage behind kneecap mostly disintegrated. Particles floating in joint n lock up randomly.
So bit of a clean out for the time being. Specialists were puzzled how its worn out so heavily. I'm only 50yo. Could this be a windsurf related injury? I mostly fang around on flatwater.

doubt it, I'm 76. been sailing from the mid 80s, including a few very flat landings from high out of control jumps. The worst of which put me on crutches for a few weeks. But knees are the least of my worries, back and right hip are my problem areas.
Maybe if you sail fast, stiff legged over chop, a lot of that could wear the knees

Sorry to hear.....
Born in '49, I still jump my 85 liter boards as high as they can go, knees stiff from mellow days and foiling, but ankles have kept me from running since 2007.
Getting up winging is a clumsy, uncoordinated, macabre motion.
Gave up tennis 2 years ago, just too much go and stop.

Perhaps it comes from spending too much time kneeling and begging for forgiveness.

On a more serious note, I have heard of floor tilers having knee operations before they turn 40. My dad was a builder and his knees lasted until his 60's (just).

I've got a crunchy right knee from a pushbike accident at 11 and then a motorcycle accident at 21. I saw a specialist about it when I was 42. He said there was nothing he could do about it (any treatment would make it worse). So, I just manage it now (No more big jumps ). All the best mate.

^ Yep good call. Kinda hard when mobility reduced though. In 6months of not windsurfing I'm 10kg+ heavier.

My knees did multiple crunching sounds starting in my high 40's. Still does.
Unfortunately, I did spring and fall school sports since 8th grade, and three PE classes per semester in college, then 5 years of 40 races a year motocross.
All that time, I noticed nobody older than 50 still have their legs.
What I noticed then is still true.
But what you have upstairs can still extend your physical performance.

Hey Olskool good luck with your operation.
Had my ACL reconstruction and got put in rehab program that motivated a long 9 month recovery.
Did it landing snowboard jump and had to be driven off mountain. Iced it big time and anti inflammatory but still went wave sailing with plenty strapping(spring time nz )
Had a mtb that got a trainer for but it's hard knowing how hard to push it.

Best wishes Olskool, you are a young man (of 50) so I am sure modern medicine can rebuild/repair your knee and make you even better than you were. Wishing you a speedy recovery and swift healing. Cheers Richard

Here's the thing , at 49 most things work good . At 50 all hell breaks loose .
Things that change in one year ........
Eyesight gets worse ,
Getting off the floor takes more moves ,
Hangovers are worse,
Parts hurt for no reason ,
You don't fall over , you have a fall ,
When going for a wee at night you sit on the edge of the bed for a couple seconds before standing up .
And ,
The worst is , you can hurt yourself sleeping wrong .
Welcome to 50
I wonder what you can add to the list at 60 ?

Best thing is going for a good sail makes it all seem insignificant
That said the facial massage gun now has to be charged twice a week...

Hey thanks guys! 50 huh....
Knee operation should be a relative easy fix. Rehab will be the toughest part id think.

I destroyed one of my knees from excessive running when I was in my early 30s. The surgeon had a look and told me the problem was due to my legs not lining up quite straight so I had worn out the cartilage, but that he wouldn't operate because I wasn't a professional athlete.
I could hardly walk from the time that it happened and for about 3 months afterwards.
When the pain reduced enough I started road cycling to keep my head in motion and stay fit. It took at least 18 months before continuous pain stopped and I kept getting twinges for another 2 or 3 years, but I've never suffered from it again.
While I can't say that you heal as well at 50 as you do at 30, if the pain is not crippling I'd say to avoid the knife. A few months off sailing might even reignite the flame when you get back to it.

I know a female medical student who injured her knee climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro she complained about the pain for 6 months, during that time I kept telling her to take a calcium/magnesium/ zinc supplement by Countrylife, she was about to get surgery in a week when I told her one last time to take the supplement, she finally did take it and after a week all pain was gone and did not get surgery, and I did not even get a thanks!

After 50 Cal/mag/zinc alone stopped working for me to heal injuries, but discovered creatine (pure creatine powder, nothing else) and now I take it before every session, and after too, no more getting sore and have more endurance too. But now I am also being careful to eat protein energy bars during and after my sessions. Used to go without eating during a session, just sports drink, and no food afterwards for several hours or more and then my body started to pull protein out of my long bones, that resulted in a freak accident that shattered my tibia. All good now thanks to an outstanding orthopedic surgeon and 18 screws 3 metal plates and 2 bone graphs. So remember to get your protein during and within 1-2 hours after a workout!

Interesting on the supplements. Be careful about too much Zinc, though. I was taking a similar supplement and it would give me night terrors to the point that I stopped being scared, but would just get frustrated with them. When I stopped the supplements, they went away.

Well I would question the supplier's quality control on that issue. Zinc at less than 50 mg should not cause any issue. But I knew a guy who got an off brand label of expensive single barrel scotch, it gave him nightmares after drinking, so he tested it out on an unsuspecting non-blood relative (did not tell them) and they had nightmares too, then he told them about it.

Shame about the scotch.

Looks like it was 30-60mg depending on the night. But, even then, only 30mg would give me the night terrors.

I hope you are not talking from experience I thought that dementia was when you put on a seat harness and wondered why it was a bit loose and soggy.
