It would if you only have a budget of $50 or a carton. That might even be a bit generous.

bit narrow for easy learning but can be done.
a modern shorter and wider board of about 150 litres
would speed up the learning progression though.
like swindy said though it all depends on budget.

It also depends where you're going to sail. In somewhere like Sydney Harbour, where you need to be able to stay upwind in light winds, it could be OK. It could also be Ok if you have good balance and are light-ish. However, if the sail sounds crinkly like a chip bag it may be about to fall apart. The boom is not going to attach firmly like a modern one, which can be a right PITA.

If you are going to sail on Port Phillip, off Adelaide or in WA, a shorter more modern board would probably be the go. But you can learn on anything, and if it's the only way into this great sport then go for it!

on weekend average weight newbie did his first outing
put him on a Mistral Equipe 2 with a small Windwing 4.7
that board is over 200 liters , 375 cm long and about 66 cm wide
some issues with narrow width, but nothing serious
it was VERY light on-shore wind and so, can stay inshore and shallow

i wanted to try the MEQ2 in the light conditions with my 8.5 ...
so we swapped boards, but kept the sails
now he was on a Shark 145 - 263 cm x 75 cm
he seemed to have MUCH more trouble with that

guess ideally first outing is - same sail, but ...
over 200 liters and about 80+ cm wide
not many like that out there ...

and that is just for first outing
after those first few sessions, one can move down quickly
