Does anyone know if the 'old style' jacket harness are made by any brands. I used to have one in the late 80s and loved it but was all that was around. It had foam so doubled as a bit of a floatation jacket. There were no waist harnesses then.
I saw a guy on the Aloha comp the other day that seemed to be wearing a new modern version. (no padding but jacket style)
Does anyone know if these are around and what brand they might be?
I had the Dakine also but it was way too tight around the chest for freedom of movement although it was the correct size. Used it once, then gave it away. Didn't mind the higher hook but it offered no advantages over a separate harness and PFD
Are there any modern brands making them? I know Dakine is modern but are there newer models from any other brands??
Don't wanna be a pain lol - but why? they went away as they're so bad for your back, plus secondary issues like lack of arm movement and less ability to weight down on the boom
I also strongly suspect they would now force you into a position that is pretty incompatible with the stance required on modern gear
if you really want one, yachting trapeze harness maybe with mods .?
Thanks Mark, I was thinking of it because the waist harness sometimes hurts my back also. And waist harness rides up a bit. I have a seat harness but seems really hard to get into the harness lines and haven't persisted with it.
Anyway, the answer is to strengthen my back and core I think.
Ahhhh u need the elusive high hook waist harness with nappy bottom
they're rare but around
Wild Winds ??
Haha not quite
last decent one was FO
the dakine one has gone away and their "high" hook model is not quite up to waist harness level. Apparently mystic do one and in the flesh it looks right but I haven't tried it
I am surprised as a surf seat thing is so useful. High hook for learning harness, wave use too, and can be tensioned down to be like a seat almost for free ride use. Every company should make one as it would suit most users.
I have a hybrid harness from Ascan and I really like it. It is basically a regular waist-harness with leg-straps that keeps it in place, right where you want it to be. There is also an additional strap that runs around the hook (old-school style) and prevents the hook from rotating upwards while being hooked in.
I now use this harness for everything from Formula to waves, one can adjust the legstraps a little for a slightly lower or higher hook position, depending on the application. I have had less "wedgies" compared to some traditional seat harnesses and no squeezed ribs, so the best of two worlds. :)
Just need to remove the horizontal rope from the back, to make it less kite-like....
