I want to have a crack at windsurfing this summer. I don't care whether it's this gear or new (used) gear, but what I really want is a complete set-up I can use in the river in Perth this summer to actually progress on. I can sail a bit, but am still very much a beginner, so want a big floaty board (I think). The windsurfing gear I have is bloody old and I suspect no use to me as a beginner (if anyone at all). Some I bought and never got into it, some I was given (I think I know why).

Can anyone please tell me whether any of this gear is:
a) of any use to me this summer in trying to learn?
b) worth anything to anyone so I can sell it and put the dough towards something more suited to a beginner like me?
c) worthless but something they're interested in removing from my over-full shed for me?

Comments on the state of my garden and lawn are welcome. But don't start with the "you'd be better off getting the lawn cut and garden tidied before you worry about taking up windsurfing" nonsense, I've already had enough of that from my missus.

You should be good to go with the Bic Techno board, the black boom (the one with the roundest head), the mast extension with the brass bolt on the screw thread and whatever mast fits the 4.5 sail.

The white board and narrow booms and the mast extension without the brass bolt /screw thread... Just chuck it all away.

I learnt on a very similar board- a Bic techno2 (248L), although I think you are slightly more pies than me.

Your small sails will be hopelessly suboptimal for your Bic board. You would want something in the order of a 7m freeride sail for this board and pick the right time of the day for moderate winds. 5.5m minimum. It is possible to plane around on a 152L with a small wave sail (the new stuff), but it requires prior experience in setup and rigging and it's not fun.

I think that he wants to learn from scratch so the 4 or 4.5 is fine for the first 10 sesssions

If you use the top mast base. Grab a new tendon (orange flexible bit). There is a good chance it will break very soon with very little effort.

When I was a beginner on here asking questions similar to DH. I was so tempted to buy a 4.7m sail. I very glad I didn't. I'm not saying he should go out right now and buy a bigger sail, but it's something to be mindful off if he doesn't progress in the next few months.

Thanks a lot for the tips everyone. I'll keep that usable stuff and maybe keep an eye out for a bigger sail.

If anyone wants any of the other stuff for some kind of science experiment, art project etc let me know and its yours.

^^ Don't chuck masts, the land yacht crew want them

even though keeping the top black boom, keep one of the other clamp on ones as a spare as ally booms can fail for no reason at any time

Yeah JN good point he will need bigger soon enough

Yep +1 for the BIC techno 283
I'm just over 3 years in and a slow learner at 90+ kg.

It's my go to board as soon as the wind gets to 7.5m size (got bigger stuff for lighter winds)

Wasted my money upgrading to a modern 2014 Go151 - BIC is a much more useable board

Probably a bit tippy for first few lessons - I mainly water start it

However it's a board that comes with a strong reputation - hang onto it

Cheers Jeff
