I used to windsurf there (sandy Point in Shallow Inlet) years ago but went stand-up paddling yesterday out to the mouth and caught a few waves. How risky is that?
Corner Inlet is the one you're thinking about and yes it's full of sharks. Major place for Great Whites to have their young.
I know of one shark sitting at the entrance , a 4 to 5 mt GW cruised under a kitesurfer. Very very close but no interest shown by the shark. Lots of interest by the kitesurfer ??. She was very animated when she got back, felt that it was an amazing opportunity to see a great animal in the wild.
I haven't surfed there but sailquick does and he hasn't been eaten yet ![]()
Generally speaking, Waratah bay and Shallow Inlet are relatively shark free. It's off the beaten path a bit. Very few shark sightings over the years I have been here (forever).
Having said that, the entrance to any inlet is a bit dicy. We catch a lot of Salmon around the entrance so there might be a few Noahs following them. I have surfed a lot out there and at times there have been sensational breaks, but the entrance has shifted a lot and it is no where near as good now as at some times in the past.
One day we were surfing there and a school of salmon surged past right around us. My mate's son quickly paddled to the boat saying he wanted to throw out a lure and try to catch some. I followed him, but I was more interested in the question of what was chasing them. ![]()
My strategy: Surf with a mate. That gives you a 50/50 chance. ![]()
And no way would I swim or surf anywhere around the entrance of Corner Inlet, or any of the channels inside it either. ![]()
Food for thought- no pun intended.
Yep. Anywhere in that Corner Inlet complex right through from Yanakie, Port Franklin, Port Welshpool, Port Albert to McLoughlins Beach. I would not go swimming in any of the channels.
I still want to try out the Port Albert Nautical Mile windsurfing run though.
I'm taking Hardy for my 50/50 chance.I recon he looks tastier than me. ![]()
Thanks!
I have a house overlooking Corner Inlet and paddle out there a bit. I heard there were lots of small sharks (e.g. school sharks) that the fisherman went after, but not the big whites. The other day I went for a paddle and was followed by dolphins for 15 minutes - so maybe I was only safe for those 15 minutes...
I thought I had more to worry about in Shallow Inlet, but maybe not...
Thanks for your comments!
