Hi, need to rack some brains in here! especsailly amongst GPS and speed sailors.
My plan of attack as follows,
*No wind-12knots SUP and plug sail in to teach and have fun on SUP
*12-22knts Kitesurf in onshore SE qld mush (which I do and love is much easier than trying to wavesail in the mush and currents!, not 21 anymore either!)
*+20knots Trade my Nasih Wave Q 254 in on a Slalom set up find some flattish water and maybe look at getting into GPS,(we do have a couple of good runs in SE Qld) I used to be fast well my ego says thinks so!...am pretty fit so maybe its where I need to head on windy days.
*budget is pre loved initially, if I crack 35knts I will look at new and specialized gear.
So SB Isconics look the trick as too Exocet SL(maybe more comfy?).. just trying to match the right size boards and rig combos...was hoping just 2 sails, 1 mast/boom..20-30knts then +30knts 2-3 fins.
Not into filling van/gargage with gear, been there doen that!
Anythoughts advice appreciated.
Ta, Mick
Hi Mick your about the same weight as me. If you looking for a Slalom/Speed kit i would diffenately look at the IS86. Ive done over 39knots on mine at wello and it handles the chop very well.
for conditions 20+ it will be ideal with a 6.8 and then maybe around a 6m when it gets windier. With fins I would use a 34 C3 venom with the 6.8 and a 30 with 6m.
There's also lots of good info in the GPS/speed section in this forum
If your after any sails im selling my 2009 Loft Blades 6.8 & 5.6 in the next couple of weeks when the new models arrive.
by the way where do you normally kite/sail

Before going to isonic, I would definitely consider a Carbon Art SL55 or a SL58. These boards are super quick and the construction and finish (hand finish) are the best on the market.
The SL55 is the perfect board for high wind sailing up to 6m sails and has what feels like an unlimited top end speed while staying in control.
I have used a SL58 with sails up to 7.6m though ideal is 6.6m.
As far as GPS speed sailing goes, many PBs have been broken with carbon art boards. The results speak for themselves.
These boards can be easily ordered online and delivered to your door for just under or on par with other brands.

Realistically getting a sail for 30+knots is pointless (says the man with a 5.1 race sail
).
For here a 58 wide board you will get a fair amount of use out of. Sail wise a 6.0 will see you for 20-30 knots, if you chase the flat water you could hold it in more than that if required.
Fin wise look to something around 31cm for chop and 27cm for the flat.
You could easy go smaller with board, sail and fin but you don't just buy something and go super quick on it. Going quick is very dependant upon how much you use, how well you know your gear & how easy it sails.
If you wanted to focus straight away the ideal FLAT water speed setup for seq as much as I hate to say it- CA speed 50 (unfortunately no other brand offers something of similar width vs volume), 6.3m race sail (maui, naish, loft or pryde).
Awesome tips thanks heaps for your time much appreciated.
Seems that The SB and CA boards are the go..Not sure the CA will be durabale enough for a cluts like me (bad memories of a high tech carbon slalom board in the 90's!..not sure I will get good/fast enough to appreciate the extra 5% performance?..could be wrong...if you thnk they are as strong as any mainstream production let me know (have read some commenst online that suggest not
Got too say the whole GPS thing seems exciting and funway to push yourself and not be too lazy!
Any thoughts on Exocet I think they also come out of Thailand (SB), have seen a few around the construction seems really high qaulity and durable.
Anders Bringle (mistral) new range also look spot on..but thats down the track , will be to exy for me for a while yet.
And yes I did some research on sails..KA and the LOFT sail also..really like what I found especially on the Loft, tuneability of them (currently sail some old Ezzy wave sails and I like the feel if them also, find that they have great wind range when you tune them accordingly, and durability and cross ply is a big plus. Both have a really strong race/speed design background with results thats speak for them selves...
I Am surprised at the sail size's mentined I guess with the new gear now the range and hold ability per sale is much wider...?
So ist a small-mid 6m and a small mid 5m? 2 fins, 1 boom and mast to suit both...Ideal!
I was thinking sub 85ltr in board (given that my wave board is 84ltr and I can get that goinging 12-15 knots on a large 5m)...but maybe I am wrong to think that and could end up to my guts in water looking for a gust!...its always gusty so perhaps er on the larger side?
The new volume v's width thing is a bit confusing also, eg can have way less volume when offset by more width...??
Looking at board design currently seems anything in the last couple of years is current...prior to that some designs get a bit off the track..note some JP slalom with weird ass's! SB fish etc....
+30knts ..very rare here...but we do get blows from now to May that will often be 25-28knts constant with 30 gusts...
Best thing that will come out of this I am sure is one board, 2 sails....nice simple and easy!
Vando, Kite sunshine coast..normally Coolum to Sunshine strectch or cotton tree, windsurf the same Coolum, Castaways....Sth at Mudjimba when super windy and blown out will have blast on the lakes or G/beach.... Elliot heads 2-3 times per year, yet to sail Burrum..and this month kited at Flat Rock for the first time...amazing place..dolphins..really nice waves..easy to sail or kite at...
Got to say thgough the windsurfing is not that often these days because it rarley is above 20kts and the kites are just too easy in 12-22knts..some would argue at above that also..but I have kids..so no kite above that!
If you're looking for a good pre loved board then an Exocet SL TB58 would be a good option for that range. I use mine with sails from 5.2 to 6.7 which is a pretty good range and it's an easy board to dial in.
In fact the pic in my avatar is the TB58 with the 5.2m. ![]()
What you need is a fanatic falcon 90 or 80 ( I have the 90) and a Tushingham x-15 7m and 40 kts will be within your reach ![]()
