I have a np x6 boom and the boom head had got a bit lose, tried to tighten it with the Allen key but just seemed to tighten clamp. Any ideas on how to tighten the head? Thanks
If you are tightening the bolt that holds the clamp on, I am unsure where you mean it is loose?
Do you mean the clamp can swivel - so the boom (clew end) can move up and down after being attached to the mast? If so, it is supposed to do that and a new boom will not have much movement but loosen up considerably after use
If you are talking about the head fitting being lose on the boom tube then you can shim it out. Some really thin plastic like monofilm works well.
Yes it's the boom head lose on the boom arms, when clamped on to mast all seems fine and solid. Never had this before with other booms, maybe it's no issue and assists with different clew end heights on diff sails, has loosened up with use
Dezza, have a real good look at the boom head and where the arms attach. My x6 went loose the other day and I thought the same as you, just do the bolts up tight. Today when sailing I tore the arm out of the boom. It snapped right up at the boom head, across the alloy part. This is the second 2010 NP X6 that I've snapped like this, The first failed within 6 months and got replaced under warrenty but this one held in a bit longer. Not saying your is going to break but worth a closer look, The damage is hard to see until it does break.
Hopefully yours is just truly loose.
Cheers.
Dont worry about a bit of looseness in the boom head! Won't be long and it will snap in half. I have also had 2 X6 booms that lasted less than 12 months.
