My 490 cm Epic Gear 100% carbon mast got stuck together after a session in crashing waves. Searched on how to seperate and mixed and matched to come up with a one person mast safe solution.
Soaked inverted joint with WD40 and left O/N inverted/standing upright. Then tied a hitch knot to lower section just below joint, wrapped rope around tree, and tied second hitch knot to lower section. Then boiled a quart of water and put in a thermos, slowly poured hot water on female side of joint so water wrapped around section for 20-30 seconds, then twisted upper section to take up rope slack, and then twisted hard for a second at most and mast seperated with no damage. Carbon fiber is cured at around 100 degrees C.
Good to see another method to get em unstuck. I've done a few for others.
If you're at the beach n you get stuck, invert mast. Top to the ground.Grab it one hand above head height, the other about waist height. Then shake the mast violently about 5~10 times. Usually that'll loosen the ferule. If it doesnt, rotate mast n shake again until it does. Happy days.
Note to self. Must tape mast..... but I seldom do.![]()

I always tape it, but was using clear packing tape and it came loose, Duck tape next time. Thanks for the beach tip, had to drive home with it sticking out the front side window. Will also keep rope in bag for trees at the beach if needed.
I got an 15 year old 400 mast apart after watching a few u tube videos.
Basically bending the mast between a deck and the ground to get plenty of bend, in the gap add a washer and let it straighten in and work around the mast. Then increasing the washers or whatever a thicker flat piece from the garage I use.
After a while I got it apart
Another tip is use a bike inner tube to give really good grip.
Once I have a good gap and have used the file so its approx 8mm gap then I get a 100kg mate to twist.
The issue I have now is with my 460 getting stuck on a more regularly ![]()
