Hi
I know this has been asked before but I cannot search the posts. Does anyone have any pointers for the board volume for high wind sailing e.g 25kts+. I am 80-85kg and usually sail a 105L board (yep 20+weight=board vol). Even though my board is only 242cm long I still find it lifts in high wind and become very twitchy in gybes. I have heard that I should go to 85L for big days but just wanted to check what everyone else thinks. I can water start and I dont expect to be uphauling in 25kts+
FSW is nice and forgiving, JP, RRD, Tabou 3S
About 80L but probably use a smaller than factory fin once u get up around 30kn+, else you may need to go even smaller. 70L would be ideal but I see you are in ACT so I'm assuming gusty?
I'm ~90kegs and sail a JP 92L FSW most of the time.
Once it starts getting to the +25knt range I switch down to a JP 82L RWW
Like Mark said though, once the wind is pushing 30kn and above, the 4.5m is on and I change fin sizes

Depends how good you are? Keep the board and run a fin 4cm shorter as that will calm the board down in high winds. From an X-ACT sailor I know you need a bit of float as it is gusty and can go from zero to 30 knots and back again. I personally would keep it at least 15L over your body weight, If you wan't a new board then a FSW or freeride board in 95-100L would be good for LBG (I'd get a JP magic ride).
I miss sailing in the ACT ![]()
Really Jason? I'd give anything to be near Gerroa and Sanctuary Point instead of Canberra.
I'm 92kg and happily sail my 94L Kode in anything up to 35kts.
However I completely agree with Jason, LBG is a tricky place to sail and sometimes you can get stranded if you're relying on water starts....my Lake board is a 119 Carbon Art.
Smaller fins work wonders when you're trying to keep your board on the water....I'd try that first.
All the above plus try and move the mast foot a bit forward, will help you keep the board down. But over 25 knts you'll have more fun with a smaller board, I would go about 90 ltrs, there are a lot of good boards around that size, and the step will not be too hard from 105.
I reckon as soon as its over 25kts, you can use the same volume as your body weight.
I'm 72kg and I use 70-74lit in these wind strengths.
Seems the other respondents find similar.
Thanks fellas, I left this for a few hours thinking I wouldnt generate much interest.
Just so you know - I rarely sail in Canberra (2-3 times a year) as I live down the south coast and we get some howling NEs and Southerlies.
I think the body weight suggestion is a good one. Im no legend but there arent too many people passing me. I just want something that is more controllable in the big wind and chop. Im a bit of a Tabou fan so might look at an 80-85L board
Appreciate the tips!!!
Less width and more rocker can also make a good board for high winds if you want comfort, but you would tend to be planning less often and have a lower top speed.
