I was given a Hifly 700, i think its a vintage board, it has all the original parts, i can't figure out how to set it up. help would be greatly appreciated
Most booms, since about 1985 ish have a clamp system, yours doesn't. You need a rope that weaves in and out of the small holes and around the mast. This is done with the boom parallel to the mast. You then swing the boom down perpendicular to the mast and that rope will tighten and secure your boom. It will still be floppy up and down compared to the "modern" (30 year old) system.

Actually, I remember the rope is secured to the mast permanently with hitches and a single line remains, this is then secured through the holes and tucked under the loop.
just an fyi for OP/original poster

To me that is not a clamp and your other link doesn't represent how those booms used to be attached. It looks like the second generation Windsurfer one design boom. First gen being wood.
Do a hitch around the mast with one long length remaining, the other end is a knot and blocks the hitch.
place the boom over the tip of the mast and lay parallel to the mast. Pull length of rope that you secured to the mast up through one of the two holes in the boom, down through the other. This makes a loop. Then bring the rope on the outside, over the top and through the loop that you made. How tight you do this dictates how tight the boom will be. Then lever the boom down to be perpendicular to the mast. This will tighten the ropes and tighten the hold of the boom on the mast.
Find a cheap used boom with a clamp-on front end and avoid this hassle, it just pain isn't worth it. You will struggle with rope tension so the booms won't slip down the mast while sailing. It's frustration by design.

phuck that old crap - giant triangular sails and lengthy/long tie on booms
for not a lot of cash can do MUCH better
^^^
And youll get frustrated with all the slop and then do it up real tight then hear cracking noises as you ruin your mast.
Also definitely positively buy a new rubber doingy thing that attatches the mast to the board.![]()
Enjoy the retro vibe in the sun.
