G'day. We are off on a Hawaii adventure in December. Return flights ~$500. So the question is, where to sail on Maui or Oahu in their winter... dates non-negotiable. Obviously I'll need to hire some gear and preferably stay somewhere I can walk into the water. Or we could hire a van if I have to. thanks

Been on 12 Hawaii trips in Dec.
A few others for surfing only, but those extend into April.
Mostly 3 out of 7 days of +15, meaning better for little guys or foils.
Oahu can blow good at BYU and show 10 at Kailua. Heck, the next beach past Kailua can blow....or blow 10 less than Kailua, on any given day.
Sailed 'yards and Revs with 4.7 when nobody went out at Moks or DH.
And most consistent I think is Runways at Honolulu Airport.
Maui pretty much gets 2 out of 7 days, but you have to include S side 11 miles away.
Kaui seemed windy, but you need to drive the whole coast from Tunnels to Mahapuu....that tree lined access road past Lihue Airport. Airport has wind when almost nothing else does, like airports often do.
Good luck, explore, and may the wind gods bless you.

Seems December is not ideal but not my choice really. Looks like I might need a car after all...

Better luck on Maui than Oahu, but both places will be thin for wind in Dec. but the surf can be big.
There has been many threads here all about Maui, so no reason to cover that again.
But I can't imagine being at either place w/o a vehicle, it's a must, when there is no wind, you go traveling to see the sights and eat at great places that are spread out.
