Still a way off sailing but any suggestions / pros and cons? I'll just be using it early on. Hopefully I can ditch it as I build up muscles etc.
Although no where as near as significant as your injury, I sprained my wrist mountain biking. I put one of those wrist braces on that has adjustable pieces and a stiff composite or metal bar to prevent excessive wrist motion and just hit the water.
It got corroded and nasty but I was healed by that time and didn't care that much.
And I was crashing a lot then.
Yes I had a quick look online but there were a lot of sports guards and a bit confusing. I suppose I want one that allows a bit of movement but has a bit of protection from letting the wrist get bent back.
I wore a wrist guard for a while but my phisio told not use one, never sailed with the guard. I did find it difficult to cary board with weak wrist.
If something goes sideways you risk getting an injury to the weak wrist that puts you out for a lot longer than original injury.
I won't be trying to sail until I am capable of putting the big board in the van, rigging, including using a downhaul whinch and doing dry land gybe practice without pain..![]()
I don't want to go back too early , re injure myself and go back through this again..![]()
All the wrist braces I have used and still use (for good wrists) are for snowboarding and rollerblading, they have a hard plastic form fitting plate that runs from under the palm to just past the wrist (under wrist) with a breathable mesh back that wraps securely around hand with velcro. They allow your fingers and thumb to move freely, while spreading out the load on your wrist if you fall forward and use your hands to stop yourself from hitting the ground face forward.
You could use sports tape to provided support so wrist can not bend backwards, but not water proof. Used to get injured ankle and knee taped up for soccer, really worked good.
And I am now using Arnica gel more, instead of taking a pain killer. Had a sore shoulder from weightlifting and swimming, rubbed it with the gel and pain went away, pain came back next day but less, so repeated treatment and now pain free in shoulder.

My chiro has strapped previous injuries so that might be the way to go.
I'm using Arnica cream alternately with Voltaren cream.
The hands improving but lack of range and muscles in the arm are causing issues. I'm seeing the physio today so hopefully we can start working on that.
Sue, go see a physiotherapist that specialises in hand / wrist / arm rehabilitation. They should be able to make you a custom cast from light thermo plastic and velcro that is molded to your arm / wrist and provides support and protection, but allows you to grip the boom. They will also give you exercises to improve flexibility and strength of your stiff joints and wasted muscles from wearing your plaster cast. You will find that uphauling and waterstarts the hardest things to do and will be very difficult untill you get strength back in your muscles.
I almost exclusively foiled during my rehab, because the small sails used are much less physical than slalom sails.
She said by the time I'm ready I shouldn't need anything..Looks like it's going to be a long slow road..![]()

Hey, hang in there, maybe there is something else you need to work on?, I know waiting for the paint to cure on my board gave me the time I needed to focus on a project I had been delaying. Or maybe time to pick up some other hobby?, or volunteer work to help others is always available.
Yes - given your other logic, if you fix the wrist is one thing but you need to fix the whole arm just to be sure.
My partner used to be a massage therapist and he's been massaging the arm / shoulders etc. Much better last night although it's still hard to sleep.
Luckiy it's my left arm so I can still paint. I've been catching up on portrait commissions and I'm really enjoying that. ![]()

Sleeping with an injury can be a challenge. I ended up taking 2x10 mg melatonin 1-3/4 hr before bedtime and that really worked for me. Can also get a quick release version, or crush the regular ones, if you forget to take early. But I would set an alarm on my phone to remind me. And if the one dose does not get you through the night, they also make an extended release version now. So try the Arnica on your arm right before bedtime, and the melatonin, that should help.
Glad to hear you have something to do!, that will help a lot.
Oh, something I learned well after I shattered my knee, creatine is an all natural product our bodies make, and supplementing with 5 grams daily of 100% pure creatine monohydrate (no additives) really helps to heal injured and sore muscles. Now I have read that some people respond to it and others do not, all I can say is my body responds to it.
