Yesterday my brand new Ezzy sail arrived. (It's yellow/read and a real beauty)
Ezzy sails recommends a 490 Mast plus 12cm-14cm extension.
Planned usage: Lightwind sailing/planning on lakes. 8kts-16kts
Less important: top end range and speed.
I own a nice North Power XT 2.0 SDM extending up to 42 cm.
Hence, at full extension and usin a high % carbon 460cm SDM mast I would reach the 502cm recommended by Ezzysails.
Has anyone any experience or what would be the expected outcome with this "softer" combination relative to the 490cm + 12cm combo?
Thank you for any feedback

If the extension doesn't flex , it may not be softer. But it would have to flex to a degree. X factor 1
Your weight could be a factor. X factor 2
Your going to have to try it and see how the sail sets under power.
Something scares me using a long ext on maximum , kinda like using a boom all the way out , but mabee not so bad.
I think it would be close.
The only way your going to bo totally happy is to borrow , steal , a 490 to compare it to.
im with imax it will depend on your weight,im a heavy and own a older 8.5 lion a 460 np was not up to it ,but if you were lighter then a 460 might be fine. just set it up the way none ezzy mast should be
My weight is 86kg. Probably I need to try it out myself... Looks like nobody has gone that path. Thanks,
Sunzi
Sunzi, i sail Ezzys. Im 105kg. Prefer sdm to rdm. Different sail,But atm i rig my Severne RB 9.5m similar to your method as i dont have correct mast. 520 base 490 top n big xtension to get 539. 490 is softer than 530 so top section has a very deep profile which cannot be detuned. (Made to spill.) Rigged like this the sail has mega power in light wind but gets very hard to control over 12kts. Rigged on correct mast its a whole different friendly beast.. The Ezzy how ever can be rigged on most masts. Such a tuneable sail. You may sacrifice a bit of tuning with incorrect mast. But as others have said, you wont know unless you give it a go. Itll work but there will be a trade off somewhere.
You'd probably be happier finding an appropriate mast. Anything constant Curve will do. SDM probably better in that size. The proper mast will also give you more length as it is likely you will run extra downhaul. Ezzys really like that.
It will work without a doubt
,but you won't achieve your sails full potential .make sure your bottom cam doesn't rotate on the top of the
extension fitting ..it should be clear on the two cam lion .
if its a naish or any hard top mast it might be ok .no too soft .
well done on getting a great sail ...
Another thought, if its to be your goto most used sail, id definately get the correct mast. But if you have a quiver of sails already, any CC mast will do. As you would normally change down sails when overpowered. But It all comes down to personal preference really.![]()
Thanks for all of your comments. It would look like 8.5/490+7.5/460+6.4/4.30+5.5/... Please note that I've got 2 young boys covering 3.7-5.5. This makes a lot of masts (and else)to carry around ;-)

Hi sunzi.
my 7.5 lion came with the RDM cams in place ...just thought I'd mention don't forget to put the sdm ones on .
enjoy your light wind sail .it will increase your time on the water ..
Will do thanks.
Ezzy strongly recommends to use a 490cm mast after consulting them.
Will probably go for a North Gold 80% mast. I'd assume not much difference to the 90% version of this year or a 100% platinum mast which comes with a hefty price tag, right. Sunzi
Sunzi, i rig my 8m Cheetah on North gold. No complaints. I prefer it to my Ezzy rdm. Im 105kg. Wish i had a 490 gold for my 9.5Lion as well.![]()

i have used a 7.5 ezzy on a ezzy 490 mast and found it worked better than a np 460 also tried a 490 top and a 430 bottom that did not work at all ,eventually i brought a 460 ezzy for the 7.5 but was not much difference to the 4.90 maybe just buy a 490 for the 8.5 and 7.5 and a 430 for the smaller sails
good choice sunzi
I also use a 490 SDM north mast on my 8.5 cheetah ..its a pleasure to use . it sets perfectly ..
i'm sure the 80 will be a good choice .without breaking the bank .
Today I bought myself a North Gold series 490 from 2017 (=80% carbon) In the store they said that it is hard to measure the carbon content anyway and the weight of the 2018 model is the same.
Can't wait to rig it up in the garden and replace the cambers to the correct ones and then certainly ..... try the sail on the water.
Will have to be patient though as both of my boys will have a life guard tournament the whole day....
Cheers to down under and thanks again for the kind tips
