Thinking of getting a go pro..They say this one is wateproof to 30m but I wonder whether it would survive a catapult? Anyone use one?

Mm I'm just watching the video and they say it still needs a case if you want to mount it..pretty useless concept then? 
The GoPro Session is cheaper and smaller too. Depends no your budget. I'm looking at a session for sailing. I like the mast view & boom end view too
Certainly does survive catapults. And worse. The Hero 5 (and the Hero 5 Session) are now inherently waterproof without a separate housing, which is massively more convenient. The cage for mounting is now very minimal so hardly any increase in size. Waaaaay smaller than all the previous GoPros.
Main difference between the Hero 5 and the 5 Session is that the Session has a non-changeable sealed battery whereas the Hero 5 has a removable battery so you can carry spare batteries for longer recording (since the battery runs out well before you ever fill up the memory card).
I went the Session. Cheaper and smaller. And an hour or so of recording is plenty to have to wade through for post-sail editing! Also, I'm not sure I'd wanna open up the Hero 5 at the beach to stick in the next battery and risk exposing to sand, dripping water, etc.

Buy 2 sessions and double the record time. Almost economical.

It says it auto rotates so there is no upside down vision ? .. that's a pet hate of mine..
I liked the idea of the voice control but that wouldn't work windsurfing would it? It wouldn't be able to hear you?
Hey you could have 2 sessions one on the whiz mount and one on the mast and video at the same time to get 2 angles at once..
I imagine with my limited repertoire it would be pretty boring..

You are in a very small minority. However robust editing could fix even Magic's epic
ive got a session 5 - awesome. So light. I have not tried the voice control yet, however I was really surprized how well you could hear my voice above the wind. I'll try the voice control this year, as it would save a lot of dead (boring) footage
I've got to learn how to edit, the file is 3.73GB, I would post it, so that you could get an idea on how my voice comes through however it way to big
Session with remote control unit. They are both water proof. Remote comes with a wrist strap, and can just turn on video or camera from your wrist. Saves battery and endless editing.
have had the GoPro 1 and the 3
when I lost the 3 which i preferred over the 1 , i purchased a no-name copy = much cheaper
and does the job
my son has the GoPro session 4 and loves it - does not windsurf

I bought the replay xd, it is smaller than the gopro when mounted, its not a square box thing,
more like a cylinder. its survived my catapolts of the other week, I still have swelling from. I got the
water proof housing witch has a 190ft depth rating. the camera on its own is 5m water proof but it wouldn't
survive the water pressure of a big crash so I got the housing also.

This might give you an idea of the sound quality. It's of LG in Jan this year and my 1st go with the session5. It's mounted on the side of my helmet. I didn't quite have the angle right (yes I know there is a little too much nose in it). I uploaded it onto you tube at a low resolution, so the quality isn't that good, however the raw footage quality is amazing.
I don't know how to post video's onto seabreeze (would appreciate help here regarding this- brain's trust) however here's the link (copy and paste it into your web browser)

I prefer the awe F**k or oh Sh**t before the big wipe out, adds to the sense of impending doom.
Go the hero 5 session rather than the straight session, its more expensive, however it has the advance wind noise reduction and video stabilization. The stabilization is quite noticeable, ive got an old gopro, the very first model, looking back through the files you really notice how bouncy the image is.
Sue all I'm going to say is be prepared to learn and take the time to edit your video, otherwise you'll fill your computer with video you and no one else will watch more than once. Also from experience, don't get disappointed when your family or friends fall asleep watching your windsurf vids, I don't know why but they just don't find them as exciting as me
Anyway go buy a GoPro, either, I have the Hero 5 and the quality is great. Get a good mount like a Flymount, make good videos of your local and upload to YouTube, then post here. I for one enjoy most videos people share

I really recommend Hitfilm Express for the editing (Free). Anyways i used my GoPro session on the top of my mast in my latest bit of filming. It's way shakier than last time but has all to do with the much choppier water. I wonder how much the normal camera would've smoothed that out. Little is my guess. So, like you said, short and sweet for avoiding asleep audience! :D (1:32)
Don't mount your Go Pro to the front of the Boom... Mine hit the deck, the mechanism must have let go, and then it sank... why an action camera sinks is beyond me.

The main reason I want it is to suss out what I'm doing and improve + stills and yes some video to look back on when I'm older and greyer and can't sail anymore Mind you with my injury rate lately I'm starting to wonder if I will be able to keep sailing

I already edit videos . Another thing I like about the hero is it says you can mark bits you want to find again although they rely on voice commands so I'm not sure if they work sailing in windy conditions?

you can put a float on them and then they will float and/or you can add a tether should the other fixing break. I ran a tether as it was less bulky and ment the camera was still attached and not floating but lost. Both GoPro products.
Just used a Go Pro 5 the other day that is a mate's. The footage is nice and clear, however the format is MP4 which is not recognised by my iMovie Mac editing software. The Go Pro software for editing is very limited. Any suggestions.

Dean I'm surprised it's not recognised, having said that the GoPro software can convert it to make it compatible with other editing software. I use VideoStudio and can load the files without converting.
I had one... strapped to the boom in front of my hand, which was a great position until it hit the deck, unclipped and sank.

In my original GoPro, I replaced the battery several times because it would not hold a decent charge anymore. Every battery has a limited number of recharge cycles before the capacity goes down. Typical specs are about 300-500 cycles; after that, you'll notice substantially shorter recording times. If you record 150 sessions a year, you may need buy a new Session every 2-3 years because the battery fails. But if you record 30 sessions a year, battery life should not be a problem.

Good reason to buy one with a replaceable battery..
Bit worrying about the tether ..I'll have to suss options out. I rarely catapult but will probably be waving at the camera and stack it..
I might have get some new editing program too as the one I have stops working halfway through and will only do short videos..it's a cheapie and this didn't matter as much when I didn't do many. It is very annoying though..
