Hey,
Just came back from the Maui Race series. June 14th to June 25th.
Took 2 board bags of 23kg each for NO extra charge.
1 Slalom board one surfboard 1 boom in the first bag + clothes
2 sails 2 masts 1 boom in the second bag + clothes
Had a carry-on luggage + little back pack.
Flew with Hawaiian Airlines via Honolulu, you have to transfer your boardbags at Honolulu on the way to Maui, not on the way back they go straight to the second flight to Sydney.
Included in your economy ticket is: 2 suitcase 23kg each OR 1 suitcase 23kg and 1 surf board bag 23kg OR 2 surf board bags 23kg each.
Never mention it's windsurf gear, say it's surfboards, longboards or SUPs.
You can actually check-in online and select 2 surfboard bags for no extra charge.
Just letting you know, there is heaps of gear rental there, Second wind Maui have all sizes slalom boards of 2018 RRD and Fanatic, and 2018 S2Maui sails /North sails all sizes. I think one day rental is $70usd.
Hope it helps,
Max
I always only take my harness, I don't like to worry about my gear, so I don't take it, and I like to travel light. I'd rather abuse their rental gear which is often newer than mine, and worth the fee, which when taken into account of the total cost of the trip, isn't that much. Good rental deals at about 4 different shops over there on the north shore, they are all good. Multi-day package deals are the best.
All I bring is my harness as well. Good gear at second wind. I sailed a new 2018 Fanatic Free wave board with a set of Zeta sails with Ezzy Hookipa masts. I paid an extra $10/ day for insurance on the gear. Well worth it in case you break anything.
