Hi all, am looking at getting back into it after about 15 years and am after a setup. what should i expect to pay / what should i look for?

- previous rig : tyronsea 330 with a 6.0
- could sail up/down wind but no tacks/gybes. just fall off and turn around.
- could plane it & get into the straps & didnt use centreboard. flat out runs was all i wanted to do.

- now weigh 100 kilos but the wind in cairns is a pretty steady 10 -12 kt south easterly, and more days than not it howls. this month has been consistent 20 kts so the northern beaches are perfect for some speedy straight lines as far as you dare.

- not after new gear, the cheaper the better. up to 5 or 8 years old?

all advice much appreciated,

g.

7.5 ezzy cheetah ducati in hervey bay has one iv brought sails of him before,he looks after them well they are bullet prove sails.for boards it will depend if you want a center board jp explore or funsters if you want center board, 160 to 205liters. if you want a free ride board then a jp exite ride 130 to 160the exite ride has a lot more performance than the center board design but will be harder to go up wind. you will be able to up haul all these boards.my wife owned a 330 it was bent like a banana very hard to get on the plane she was about your level . don,t let any one talk you in to a formula or slalom board they don,t suit the conditions up here IE try to ride a toilet door in waves you will eventually have to get a bigger sail 7.5 serverne gator is also a strong sail if you are ever coming thru townsville pm me and i will show you cheers greg

For 5-8 YO gear, easily under $800 all up, and maybe under $500 if you are a hard haggler and or willing to wait for bargains. You'll find people will be give you stuff for free. I recommend buying your base brand new rather than having somebody give you one. I've seen too many failures of old bases.

Regarding what to get, make sure you seek advice from somebody your weight and height that is independent (ie: not a salesman), and preferably a Cairns local.

Definitely get a new mastbase. Pretty much all my gear is secondhand and donated gear and i've gone through 3 mast bases in a year and a half...not worth the hassle...Also the new type of clip-lock extensions on modern boom is far, far easier to use than the older style with a button you push in then slide down but if thats what you get then there isn't really any issue.
