its pretty hard to break gear doing freestyle. that said i ruined my sail the other day when i crashed into it at high speed during a move.
before trying the volcan basic tricks like helitacks, upwind 360s and duck gybes are good practise. they help teach you good technique for sail control.

there are heaps of good websites that explain moves to you.
here are a couple.

I wish Came close yesterday but just can't get those feet to be in the right place at the right time.

Did my first sail360 yesterday which I was impressed with though At least I think it's a sail360, it goes duck flip into clew first, then flip normally, all while sailing along. Only problem was that my harness was often catching the foot of the sail as it flipped... easy enough to reef it past that point though.

GWBush, duck gybes are easy! If you can carve gybe then there's no excuse not to practice duckies until you get them. Also practicing the flip on land helps a lot.

the key to duck gybes is yanking the sail very hard past your head basically straight after you start the carve.

with your s type i think it should be ok for freestyle because it was designed as a supercross board. single back footstrap and a tiny fin. i use a 20cm mfc freestyle pro. they are great for when you start trying the volcans.

good luck.

heli tacks hurt ankles

they are actually quite easy, just remember not to jump on the board while doing them, pivot on the back foot.

also dont do them while over powerd, and on a board with no deck grip coz it really hurts
