G'day Gang
Apologies for yet another thread on foot straps.
I've been fortunate to try-before-you-buy a secondhand 135ltr Tabou Rocket, which I plan to use in 12-18kts with a 7m Severne Reflex II. Currently, the straps are all set to the furthest back and outside positions, but I can see there are well-worn marks on the inside front holes, so it's been sailed like that quite a lot too.
I've never sailed a board with straps in this position before (my current board is a 93ltr FSW) and was wondering whether I should move them inboard and forward to start off? With the size sail I plan to use and the wind strength, can you kind folk please provide your sage advice on how I should set up this beast?
Also, the board came with a couple of fins... should I be using the bigger or smaller one? I was told the bigger one tends to lift the board out of the water too much, but I'm not sure what wind strength that happened in. Both fins look pretty much the same to me... maybe 3 or 4cm difference. Shouldn't I just throw the biggest fin in that I can find, which will assist in earlier planing?
Cheers
Move the straps forward and in. The middle holes suit most people. Bringing them in will help you get your foot in. Later on you can move them out a again as you get used to sailing of the fin.
3-4cm gap between fins is ideal. Use the bigger one in lighter winds and the smaller in stronger winds.
^^^ I personally like the straps out as far as possible. As mentioned above, feel free to move them in a bit on light days until comfortable with the board, then put in a good fin & get outboard on the windier days for maximum smile-factor & speed! ![]()
Re; fins for a 7m sail - between 30 & 35cms in stronger winds and up to 40cms for light winds at a guess?
I have big feet and sail mostly in chop so I keep them in but a bit further back.
The guys who want to go fast keep them outside.
The original black freeride 42cm fin works well. I also use JP weed 36 which has a similsr length, only raked.
