I am going for a 10 day holiday in Fiji (mamanuca islands), I'd like to take a board, rig & 2 sails with me.
I'm travelling with my wife and 2 daughters so I can utilize their baggage allowance, we have 23kgs each so 92kgs all up, so now problems with weight.
I've called the airline and told them I intend on taking windsurf kit in 2 board bags neither exceeding 23kgs, but the board bag is 245 x 70. They said as long as the bags are under 277 long and under 23kgs they can form part of our check in.
However, I asked for that in writing or email as I don't want to get knocked back at check-in (can you imagine the look on the wife's face!!!!), but they said please refer to there website.....
My confusion is the statement on their website below re; bulky goods;
"Bulky items consist of any 'one' piece exceeding 158cm (62in) but not exceeding 277cm (109in) in total dimension [length + width + height], at a maximum weight of 23kg (50lbs), (may include surfboards, golf bags and other equipment)"
Whats this total dimension calc??!!?? that pretty rules out a lot of things.
Has anyone flown with Fiji Airways?
What was your experience with your gear?
How can I ensure I'm not left at the checkin desk with my gear and no plane to put it on.....and a very very angry wife....

i think that should read "in total dimension (length or width or height")
If they include surfboards i'm sure they except your board.
They might be talking about "cubic" measurement. The space an object physically occupies.
Formula is Length x Width x Breadth x 250.
For example you have a board bag that is 235 x 0.75 x 0.35 multiplied by 250 = 154.
That is inside the 158 limit they state.

"Bulky items" usually mean once you check in you lug the bag to oversize baggage and off it goes. They don't send bulky items down the regular baggage belt
FJ use B737s and A330s from AUS so you won't have an issue
hey, have traveled with them before with stand up boards up to 8 foot 6 with 2 in one double bag. it will cost you $50 each at the counter for the oversize bags just make sure if you need extra weight book it online as its $15 kg and they are cracking down on it as well as carry on weight and size to.

Just want to avoid being left standing at checkin with a heap of rejected gear and nowhere to put it. Happened before with surfboards and a Jetstar flight.
I just don't get the total dimension calc as they don't refer to it being cubic? or x 250 as Ka43 suggested?
The problem is that no one at the airline will commit to a yes or no.....
Frustrating
When you check it in - Just tell them its a surfboard, If you mention windsurfer they still think in terms of a Wally.
They probably not even give it a second look - weigh it, tag it, and send you to the oversize drop off - Get to the airport early and be in queue before the counters open.
If your really worried - have a mate come with you (with gear, you obviously will need to have someone drop you off anyway) to the airport to ready to take your gear home if it all goes pear shape.
I've taken a windsurfer (about that size) on Air NZ to Fiji without a worry - Fiji Air should be even more relaxed.
