This was our first speedweek theme for the annual Fiji trip we have the last 2 weeks of August each year.
Took across the trusty Missile 11 and KA Koncept 5.8
Geoff from Geelong joined us and Peter and Warren added to the group.
Thanks to Geoff's GPS and laptop loaded with GPS software we managed to gather some very useful info when overlapped on Google Earth.
The weather when we turned up was all in tune and we spent the first days exploring the outer reef and familiarizing ourselves with the run.
Geoff managed to remove some shin on his board and with being wet all the time he sat out a few days to dry it out, of course he had some great advise that he took a couple of days after that did clear it up.
Then the same weather event that was drenching Victoria also stopped the Low pressure migration that gives Fiji it Trade wind cycle. This gave us our own version of Ground Hog Day as we just kept repeating the first 2 days of a trade cycle over and over. so 15kt days every day.
Now considering 15kts of wind. The Nautical mile run was still giving GPS speeds pf 25kts with max speeds only around 26kts.
Peter from Auckland, still managed to use the Missile11 and 5.8 combo in barely 15kts. Pumping up onto plan and getting a GPS max of 26.7KTS. then gybing it to come back and in front of the boat tacking it.
So all the Sand spit guys reading this have a new challenge, learn to Tack your speed boards.
Video footage is coming when Camera gets back from Fiji. Mainly shows Geoff on his first outer reef runs and coming back about 2Nm with half a NP boom. He is having his own discussions with NP about their Boom issues.
All in all, once again we had a brilliant time in Fiji and each time we go back Warren has added something more to Safari Lodge. the last day there saw Warren, Nick (pom fisherman) and myself drive to Nadi, and ferry back Warrens Dive boat a twin 200hp cat. the boat ride back showed a new perspective to Fiji for me, and a few Reef sections worth an explore for sailing flat water.
With Nick the fisherman going nuts we all got sick of fresh sushi, GT, Spanish Mackerel, Yellow and blue fin Tuna.
