Hi all I need an ezzy 460 mast and I already have a 490. Ezzy website says you only need short bottom not the whole mast. Does this mean a 430 bottom and 490 top will make a 460 and if so does this affect the bend characteristics with the join being lower down the mast. wouldn't the join have to be 300mm lower to make a 460 with a 490 top?

I also have a 490 and 430 ezzy Hookipa masts, and mix the two for a 460. I also mix 370/430 for a 4m. Ezzy say you should mix 'next to each other' sizes, but it seems to work well. I think top sailors might notice the difference, but I don't.

Yes that's what it mean, when you add the numbers.
yes that may move to the reinforced area , where the boom goes to an less strength area.

Several things, the 490, Ezzy, when I used it, Lion, Cheetah, I preferred a SDM, offered BETTER character, YMMV
I tried to use a 370/430 to make a 400, it dint set well, was ok, just not as designed.to perform.
I also have, rarely used a RDM extendo, North Carbon, that gives 30 cm of EXT inside the mast EXT.
this I felt offered better, less a change in bend , esp since down low.

said already but agree, ask David.

the 490 rules me totally out.

When I was bored ages ago I rigged my sails on the Ezzy masts I normally used but with the mixed sets, i.e. 490 top and 430 base. It seemed to set very similarly. On the other hand, I tried the 430 top and 490 base and it set terribly, and Ezzy tell you not to do it anyway.

What others said, I confirm that short top + long bottom = poop. Two size up longer top with create more of a hard top. So the leech will loosen farther down towards the boom without reaching the mast. Anything will work in smooth winds, it'll be harder to handle when outside desired range or gusty conditions.

I use the two size difference to set an older gaastra hardtop sail. Worked exactly like a naish mast also hardtop.

You can also get a tip extension, it'll render the mast slightly more flextop. I use this a lot to avoid using long extensions.

I use a 490 Ezzy top with an Ezzy 430 bottom to make a 460 and it seems to work fine.

"bottom = poop"

Sorry, quoting you out of context there... Couldn't resist, ok, I'll grow up one day...
