I have a new Chinook 490 40% carbon mast which got damaged before use on the bottom of the top piece section.
I dont know how, probably clipped by forklift in shipping.
A crack running about 25mm up was apparent. I sawed off 30mm.
Mast now 487
Maybe it's still useable?
I'm using it in a spanking new 8.5m Cheetah 2021 Luff specs are 500 - 502

This is showing mast is 487, measured from top side of the headcap, which is 5mm

I'm easily confused by numbers! ??
But this looks to me that if i move the factory setting for this marker to bottom of mast, which is 30mm, exactly what I cut off, then it's all good, go time, sail time, happy days?
??
Yes, just add 3cm on the extension setting and it will be fine.
(if there is no further damaged higher up in the mast)
As it isnt an Ezzy mast, you would have to calibrate the downhaul gauge tab anyway. So do that, rig it to medium as on the dots on the leech and set the downhaul gauge to medium. You might still have to tweak it after sailing as the mast isnt an Ezzy mast, perhaps a different bend curve.
I had to cut off about 2cm from my 490 after it got damaged. No big deal.

I thought the sail lacked a bit of belly. I think its because the Hookipa mast is IMCS 30, that Chinook is 28., softer. The bend curve is similar, but not exactly the same. Quite a weight difference as well.

I'd buy the proper mast, it will make a difference, more so if you are heavier and/or want more low end power.
I use a north SDM 100% 490 on my 8,5 with 14 '' so yes need to add the extra on the extension ,but looks ok .![]()
let the outhaul off a bit for belly and away you go ,cheetahs are not overly fussy with mast ,so it looks happy .
later down the track when you have some spare cash ,see if you can get a 80 or 100 % SDM mast ,so much nicer to use on the cheetah .
