Dumb Question: Ok, just what is a mast shim for? I thought it was for mast protection, but this just seems silly now. Something to do with boom head sizes?

Puzzle: I've got a 6.5 sail that has a luff of 467. The guy I bought it off threw in all his equipment.

- There's a 460 top and a broken 460 bottom, together they make 430. He's sanded the once broken 460 bottom back.

- There is a 25cm tip extension.

- There is a mast extension but when set to 12cm it won't fit into the 460 bottom as is too narrow. The mast extension fits at larger extensions, goes to 30cm.

How did he rig it?

Also/Or: There is an aluminium mast it actually does rig on but it just doesn't "look" right with the bend and all, plus is a bitch to downhaul on it.

From talking to him for about 10mins he seemed to have spent his life windsurfing, Gorge, Maui etc. so I guess he knew what he was doing. I can't contact him as he is now somewhere between QLD and Indonesia on a boat.

Thanks in advance.

aluminium mast ive got one in excellent condition, its a 460 one piece and its been persevered in salt since the 80's never bin rinsed in fresh water and it's a permanent curve not constant, if you wan't it to be stiffer just rig it to the opposite bend they don't makem like this any more I'm sticking it on ebay next week with my weed fin $500 or you can buy it now and get a steal for $400 before i list it

Looks a bit short : (

Think I'll just do it right and get a 460 bottom.

Ok, just what is a mast shim for? I thought it was for mast protection, but this just seems silly now. Something to do with boom head sizes?

For RDMs it's often to make the boom head fit. But on SDMs, it reduces point loading on the mast - i.e. the shim spreads the load a little where the boom meets the mast.

Careful if the mast has been cut down at the bottom, that the reinforced area where the boom is supposed to go, may no longer be where the boom now goes! So you might end up with a broken mast soon than later.

Maybe post some photos of where you're up to rigging it?
